A modest proposal

Name: Anonymous 2010-06-28 4:21

since
1. Most replies are used with sage nowadays
2. Old threads rarely need to be bumped
it is proposed that
no replies will bump a thread

Name: Anonymous 2010-06-28 4:25

here's a better proposal: a 1 bump per hour per ip limit.

Name: Anonymous 2010-06-28 4:36

Another proposal:
Remove the name and email fields.

Name: Anonymous 2010-06-28 4:38

Actually we should remove the entire data line beside the post number.
it should be like:
1 Some text.

Name: Anonymous 2010-06-28 4:40

While the thread limit is 1000, without bumping and consequently necrobumping, the limit could be raised.

Name: Anonymous 2010-06-28 4:47

Another proposal:
Learn how to use subject.txt like Shii intended.

Name: Anonymous 2010-06-28 5:07

Good idea, Jonathan

I'm going to write a BBS similar to >>1-9

Name: Anonymous 2010-06-28 5:32

>>13
and call it AnonTalk

Name: Anonymous 2010-06-28 5:39

Whats the average post length on /prog/?
less than 255? It would be replaced with twitter-type board.

Name: Anonymous 2010-06-28 5:41

>>15
The BEST posts are those over 255 chars.

Name: Anonymous 2010-06-28 5:43

>>16
Exactly why we need to limit it to 140 chars.

Name: Anonymous 2010-06-28 5:44

@16 the only posts >255char are idiot code samples, talkative idiots and memes; i think @15 has the best idea

Name: Anonymous 2010-06-28 5:45

If you count the number of posts over 255 characters in lenght,
each of them could be easily made by splitting the posts into smaller 255 byte chunks. Thus 255 limit is useful, and protects against spam/garbage stealing bandwidth.

Name: Anonymous 2010-06-28 5:47

If its twitter-type board will each thread have a RSS feed?

Name: Anonymous 2010-06-28 5:50

Should the character limit ignore formatting? I'm not sure it's fair to miss out on SexpCode pong just because of a character limit.

Name: Anonymous 2010-06-28 5:51

>>20
Waste of bandwidth. Why would you need an update to something that changes once per month or is real-time like >>9

Name: Anonymous 2010-06-28 5:55

I would certainly write a BBS but how would anyone host a C program? Most webhosts only offer Python/Ruby/PHP

Rebuttal:
1. That change would turn Shiichan into an anonymous usenet group with bbcode.
2. Move to alt.sicp and write a sexpcode plugin for slrn.

Try to imagine, if you will, the amount of time and effort it would take you to write a bug-free, efficiently multithreaded real-time clock + infix calculator hybrid application in a language like C.
it turns out that anic also hired a system administrator for you who will keep an eye on the trains to make sure they don't crash. That's ANI in a technical nutshell!
Sounds good.

Name: Anonymous 2010-06-28 6:34

>>45
Timestamps discriminate against older posts and provide a visual hierarchy. A post without timestamps is more anonymous in spirit.

Name: Anonymous 2010-06-28 6:35

Let's make an OpenShiichan platform with Rails. We would have a fully RESTful architecture and allow you to login in any way you find convenient (twitter, facebook, gmail, wordpress, etc).
We would prevent necrobumping by designing a much more usable UI, that would emphasize tags and relevance to your browsing history instead of chronological order.
BTW, for formatting, do you prefer Markdown or Textile?
Anyway, I'm very excited about this. Starting work immediately. I'll give you the Github clone URL later.

Name: Anonymous 2010-06-28 6:36

>>46
Timestamps discriminate against older posts

I don't understand this. Please explain yourself. Nobody discriminates against posts based on age, if only to tell a necroposter to piss off.

Name: Anonymous 2010-06-28 6:37

>>45,46
It's true. You can sometimes tell that one person has posted on a few threads when the posts' timestamps are grouped together.

Name: Anonymous 2010-06-28 6:38

>>47
You people and your silly ideas.

http://tablecat.co.cc/bbs/info.html

Anti-Necromancy. You can enable this feature to prevent users from bumping old threads or from posting in them. You can decide how many days old a thread has to be to trigger this feature.
Why make your life so difficult when the solution is so simple?

Name: Anonymous 2010-06-28 6:42

>>50
1. Threads with 100+ posts are expected to be few.

FACT: Out of 475365 posts on my outdated prog.db, 118761 are longer than 140 characters and 62294 longer than 255 characters. That's about 25% and 13% respectively.

Name: Anonymous 2010-06-28 12:06

>>62
My database (487261 posts) gives me 117118 and 61497, respectively, but then I have 3938 deleted posts and 90744 broken posts (due to the "post 16000 posts in a single POST" bug).

Name: Anonymous 2010-06-29 4:58

>>19
But each of those 255 byte posts(the maximum) could be made by using a small amount of 16 byte posts(generally less than 16).

INFINITE COMPRESSION

Name: FrozenVoid 2010-06-29 5:10

You should use a 8byte posts(exactly 64 bits), with posts numbers being pointers to post locations(e.g. >>ff0ec2 ) for maximum optimizations.
A reference for post would be like:
 >>ff0ec2-ff0ec6  or   >>ff0ec2[4] or >>[4]ff0ec2
pointers for the same exact 8-byte value, don't need to store
e.g. "Read SIC" in many locations but instead use pointers to reach the same 8-byte value.

I got an <a href="http://www.maternityweddingdressesshop.com" title="wholesale Wedding Dresses">maternity wedding dresses</a> engagement ring for Christmas. My <a href="http://www.maternityweddingdressesshop.com" title="wholesale Wedding Dresses">maternity wedding dresses</a> boyfriend and I had been dating for almost a year and both felt the time was <a href="http://www.maternityweddingdressesshop.com" title="wholesale Wedding Dresses">maternity wedding dresses</a>right to join our lives together in holy matrimony. htmlThe month of January was spent planning our <a href="http://www.wholesale-promgowns.com " title="wholesale Wedding Dresses">wholesale prom gowns</a> perfect Alabama June wedding. My mother, two sisters and I went to Huntsville, the closest <a href="http://www.maternityweddingdressesshop.com" title="wholesale Wedding Dresses">maternity wedding dresses</a> town with a selection of bridal shops, to buy the gown that would play the leading role on my special occasion. We <a href="http://www.wholesale-promgowns.com " title="wholesale Wedding Dresses">wholesale prom gowns</a> had a wonderful time just being together and sharing silly jokes, but the <a href="http://www.wholesale-promgowns.com " title="wholesale Wedding Dresses">wholesale prom gowns</a> day soon turned serious by afternoon: still no sign of the dress of my dreams. Both sisters were ready to give <a href="http://www.wholesale-promgowns.com " title="wholesale Wedding Dresses">wholesale prom gowns</a> up and try another day in another town, but I coerced them into one more boutique.I had a good feeling as we entered the quaint little <a href="http://www.maternityweddingdressesshop.com" title="wholesale Wedding Dresses">maternity wedding dresses</a> shop filled with the scent of fresh flowers. The elderly clerk showed us several <a href="http://www.wholesale-promgowns.com " title="wholesale Wedding Dresses">wholesale prom gowns</a> beautiful gowns in my size <a href="http://www.wholesale-promgowns.com " title="wholesale Wedding Dresses">wholesale prom gowns</a> and price range, but none were right. As I opened the door to leave, the desperate shop owner announced she had one more dress in the back that was expensive and <a href="http://www.maternityweddingdressesshop.com" title="wholesale Wedding Dresses">maternity wedding dresses</a> not even my size, but perhaps I <a href="http://www.wholesale-promgowns.com " title="wholesale Wedding Dresses">wholesale prom gowns</a> might want to look at it anyway. When she brought it out, I squealed in delight.
