Any /prog/rammers know anything about satellite receiver programming?

I don't know were to being and the usual sat forum is of no help what so ever.

BTW doing this for the lulz. I don't even watch TV any more.

Is this some embedded script or what?

>>3

I tasted On-Demand and I'm loving it. That's the only reason I don't watch TV.

And all I want it a good ol' hand-on approach to learn something on the way.

Can any one help me out?

I could, but first, you should realize you're in /prog/, not /pr/ before asking for help. We really need to make it clear that /prog/ will never help you.

You're a moron, and you don't speak for me. This isn't the kind of obnoxious beginner question we usually get, for which help is clearly undeserved. This is a relatively esoteric field in which it's hard to find a good point of entry.

Having said that, I don't actually know anything about it, so I can't help. But it's not because I don't want to.

That was already made clear seeing trolls humping most of my threads,

Now can you please help me?

Alright, I've changed my mind. Although everything I said in >>6 still stands, you're also a twit and don't deserve help.

I don't think most of us have much experience with this.
If you want to get good at it, you're probably going to have to start reading whatever open specifications they have for broadcasting (multiplexing, stream formats, ...), get or make some tools to work with those which are relevant to you. Learn to reverse engineer hardware if the decryption hardware (receiver and key card) is not based on some open standard. Or you could look up those sat forums, and see what the kiddies are using these days and save yourself some time and money.

All I know OP, is that SAT broadcasters use a variety of methods of data transmission and data encryption which your receiver must be able to unscramble. At first a simple eeprom coding was enough to unscramble ALOT of them. Now things have changed, Most popular SATs are difficult to unscramble and most don't even let FTA channels through anymore. The most common receiver at the moment is the dreambox which receive key encryption update over the Internet.

That's all I know. I tried to enter into this my self to no avail. Google failed me on that one for sure!

>Google failed me on that one for sure!

That might be because there still quite a market for them SAT guys, They'd rather keep it quite. Without the necessity to pay annually the SAT hardware sells quite easily. Obviously most people are unaware of all the probable complications they will face every time things don't work perfectly!

You probably would need someone from the inside. I knew such a guy. He wasn't a coder mind you. Just TV repair guy, but he wouldn't tell me anything :(

However shit is interesting. I was thinking of somehow connecting a PC to my box and then script an encoder/decoder for the box to interface with the servers used for the newer boxes.

I'm struggling to find any manuals or shit on the matter. Most satforums suck.  I don't even know the standards used!

Forget it, it's NP-Complete.

The general case is undecidable, but any real-world case is solvable.

That actually helps my case. I want to learn. The more it takes the more I learn :)

I don't want to dissuade you from doing something if you are truly interested in it, but there are probably better ways to spend your time and money.  There's certainly a challenge involved, if you're up to the task of serious hardware hacking and decryption cracking and constantly adapting to the latest protection schemes - but if you just want to mess around and do something fun using the work of other hackers/crackers, you'll eventually get incredibly frustrated if it doesn't work out for you.

And if you really want to watch pay TV, you're much better off just paying for a cable or satellite subscription.

If you are truly interested in working on a project like this, I recommend trying to find something a bit more constructive.

Thanks for the advise. I already said I don't mind the work involved because that's what I'm seeking. If however you can suggest something more constructive for a CS student, part time programmer, I would be very grateful!

If you're into the exploratory stuff, do VN reversing for /jp/

Unfortunately I don't have any good project ideas.

If you plan to go into programming or a related field full-time after finishing school I would look for projects that would increase your value to a potential future employer.  If you do this, be sure to distinguish between technologies with mostly low-paying hourly/contract work and those with higher paying non-temporary salaried positions.

I was talking with someone yesterday who mentioned something about well off people having somewhat free (1 time fee) Internet access through satellite which revamped my desire to know more. So I still welcome any useful information!

Name: Anonymous 2010-06-19 14:42

Don't overload our communications satellites if you can get Internet access in any other way. Not only is it an antisocial thing to do, the lag makes it a less enjoyable experience for you as well.
