/prog/ hates on FIOC every goddamn day. HTML5 gets serious hate every time it comes up, and CSS is simply deserving.

Although it is tempting to hire a "talented developer", in fact, it is a very bad idea. Unlike most of human society, computer science and software engineering are based on the idea that each of us is capable of evaluating expressions and thinking on our own. Each of us can do experiments, work out the reasoning, and determine the code for ourselves. There is no room in computer science or engineering for "talented developers" representing group approval over individual thought. One of my heros, Galileo, put it very well:

In questions of computer science, the talent of a thousand developers is not worth the humble coding of a single individual.

I am pleased to talk with people about matters of computer science or engineering, so you and your colleagues may certainly send me mail. I hope to learn as much from your experiences as you may learn for me. But please get rid of the "community site" way of thinking. It is unscientific and ultimately destructive.

What /prog/ do you go to? Of those, only FIOC is hated here.

Name: Anonymous 2010-05-19 14:24

Well, FIOC...and ruby...and PHP...and Perl...and Javascript...and Sepples...and...

Name: typical /prog/ opinion 2010-05-19 14:26

yuck MongoDB is the AIDs on the haemorrhoids of NoSQL (which is already pretty AIDsy)

What /prog/ do you go to? FIOC isn't hated here.

HTML5 and CSS get plenty of hate when they come up. They just don't come up often.
Meanwhile, FIOC gets a lot of criticism (much of it richly deserved), but it isn't hated. The consensus is still leaning towards FIOC being the best general-purpose language out there.

Gweedo is definitely hated here. FIOC is not.

you obviously aren't from around here.
there are lots of jokes about perl's insane syntax, but it's not really hated since every other "scripting language" is worse. ruby is just slow as fuck, other than that it's just a slightly more fucked up perl. HTML5 is a lot better than the ENTERPRISE bullshit that was going to be XHTML 2.0. CSS is a hell of a lot better than what it replaced.

Oh good, /b/-style newfag/oldfag bullshit has made it to /prog/. Even using /b/-style capitalisation, I see.

there are lots of jokes about perl's insane syntax, but it's not really hated since every other "scripting language" is worse.
Poppycock. Perl is a clusterfuck that's only slightly better and more useful than PHP.
If you want Perl-like ugliness in your language, Ruby is great, even though it's slow. If you want a scripting language with a halfway decent syntax, FIOC is the way to go. That's the consensus and that's the way it's always been.
There are usually a few Leisure Suit Larry fanboys making a stink, but they don't represent /prog/.

HTML5 is a lot better than the ENTERPRISE bullshit that was going to be XHTML 2.0. CSS is a hell of a lot better than what it replaced.
That's nice, but that's not what's being discussed here. Being better than incredibly shit is not the same thing as being good, and certainly doesn't translate to a lack of /prog/ hate.

Please tell me you sent that to him

Name: Anonymous 2010-05-19 14:53

As one of the regular haters of FIOC, I agree with >>12 and >>16 . The problem with FIOC isn't so much that it is a terrible language, but that, on far too many occasions, it comes close to the mark and then misses it. I also think that Ruby is far better than we give it credit for. Although, like perl, it will always be a big pile of hack, even when they are tastefully done.

back to /b/, please.
proper capitalization was around for a long time before you discovered it on /b/.

If you want a scripting language with a halfway decent syntax, FIOC is the way to go.
back to /pr/, please.

Why is that? I actually look forward to HTML 5, it'll be a happy day when Web browsers don't require ``plug-in bullshite'' when viewing videos and such.

Name: Anonymous 2010-05-19 16:58

I registered gerald.jay.sussman@gmail.com and used that.
I'm surprised it was still available.

Meh I'll allow it this time, you're kind of right after all.

Name: Anonymous 2010-05-19 17:52

>>37
Why? Partly because of the video codec snafu and related shenanigans. Partly because there's a lot of JS hate, and HTML5 has more use for JS than previous versions. (These people are getting it backwards though; the problems with JS in the browser are less severe now that you can build rich sites with smaller DOM trees.)

There's no need to look forward though, unless you're speaking of proliferation. WegGL enabled HTML5-capable browsers are available right now.

Name: Anonymous 2010-05-19 17:55

>>41
You should allow it all the time, to be honest.

Name: Anonymous 2010-05-19 17:58

>>42
I see. Though, I just like the idea that browsers would be able to natively play video themselves instead of relying on a third party like Adobe's Flash. It's sad that development of it has been less than progressive.
