I fucking hate Model Ms, they make too fucking much noise. At my previous workplace I used a 1999-vintage Dell QuietKey which was the best keyboard I've ever used. Too bad I didn't manage to steal it when I left.

I have a special hacker's Scheme keyboard.

I type with my impressive penis, and use my voluminous balls to activate the '(' and ')' keys, which are specifically located to be easily accessible. When I'm done I ejaculate and the massive load pushes the button which generates a binary from my code.

If a program can't make me cum just by seeing the source, it's not yet good enough.

I use Proper Keyboards, i.e. a Model M or similar keyboards with buckling spring technology that sound like machine guns. Anything else is for faggots, pussies, or faggot pussies. "Multimedia" bullshit for luser retards, power off key (WTF), weird layouts, and rubber shit, all bullshit.

Right now I have an ARC (Model M clone) from freaking 1986 and I've just scavenged a Dell AT102W (Like this: http://diy.pconline.com.cn/mouse/hq/cq/0803/1255177.html ) that looks good (will have to clean and try it later), they were going to trash it; unforgivable.

I disagree about multimedia keys:

It's actually useful to have a set of keys that you can map to whatever you want without risking conflicts with applications.

For keyboards without them, there's usually a few keys that aren't used by anything except MS Windows, so they can be used as modifiers to use any other key in three more ways.  Still, it's nicer to be able to lower the volume of your Touhou remixes with a single key press, avoiding the EMACS pinky.

Multimedia keys are quite useful. I have found the Lenovo ThinkPlus Enhanced Performance USB Keyboard to be the best for my tastes. The Back and Forward buttons are in a convenient spot, and there are several shortcut keys for common folders. The volume and playback controls are arranged logically in a circular fashion and not strewn about like certain other keyboards. Most of all, it does not fuck with the position of the Home/Insert/End keys like those pig disgusting models from Logitech and Microsoft.

I appreciate extra keys, but there are problems with multimedia keys:

1. They're usually shitty, like rubber, or tiny, round, stupidly laid out, or generally stupid.

2. They're labelled with stupid shit. Instead of Custom1, Custom2, etc. they're named "Calculator", "Internet", and all the stupid shit stupid retards do with their fucking computers and their fucking Windows. To have a general feature such as a customizable key with a specific, retarded application name is asinine. If Windows can't get them customized it's its fault for being geared towards complete retards.

3. "Multimedia" keys? That's such a stupid luser name every time I hear it I throw up a little.

I used to enjoy my carpal tunnel syndrome developed with a buckling spring keyboard. I now enjoy rehabilitation using a touch keyboard.

Name: Anonymous 2008-11-21 18:56

>>22
What? First of all, I doubt buckling spring kayboards cause carpal tunnel syndrome more than rubber dome keyboards. Second, the keyboard never did anything bad to me. The only time I've experienced CTS was when using the mouse for too long (Morrowind).

Name: Anonymous 2008-11-21 20:03

>>23
Lucky you. I when I realised I had CTS, I visited a M.D. which did some tests and referred me to an ergonomics professional which studied me in my work environment for a day. He found that my work environment was almost adequate. He recommended some minor tweaks to the furniture and recommend that I switch to a touch sensitive keyboard and the Dvorak layout. After 6 months, the doctor tested me again and found that I was recovering very well. I had no other changes to my diet or exercise routine. Coincidence - I think not.

changing the furniture and switching to a different layout probably had a much larger effect than changing from a real keyboard to a toy one.

Name: Anonymous 2008-11-21 20:13

>>24
Probably he thought it was easier to switch your keyboard out than to teach you to type properly, and that you wouldn't accept his "minor tweaks" alone when faggots online tell you how bad your keyboard is.

Name: Anonymous 2008-11-21 21:27

>>26
Speculation. It was the whole combination of changes that improved me. The specialist said that out of all the clients he's seen, I was already doing very well and that's why his tweaks were very minor. Whether he was lying is up to speculation. If you don't understand how a touch sensitive keyboard can improve a CTS situation, then you have no right to talk about ergonomics.

>>27
There is no problem with my typing technique. I do typing tests every 6 months because of my heavy typing requirements. The tests include typical programming session, typical business letter and typical web log entries. I always place heavy emphasis into thinking about what to type before pressing any buttons. These tests are not the ``rururu rui ure'' sort of things that other people do.

My last one done in August was this:
473 cpm @ 95% accuracy
320 cpm @ 99% accuracy
150 cpm @ 100% accuracy

This result is pretty stable for the past 6 years improving only slightly each time I do the test.

Yet you got CTS anyway. Something doesn't add up.

The amount of effort it takes to press a buckling spring keyboard in the standard straight qwerty layout took its toll on me. I've also been touch typing since 1989.

Name: Anonymous 2008-11-22 0:59

>>30
Right, I'm sure that was it. It's a good thing the Dvorak layout makes the keys easier to press.

Name: Anonymous 2008-11-22 1:09

150 cpm @ 100% accuracy
That's like 30wpm...

My maximum speed is around 160wpm. That's 800cpm, and at 100% accuracy too. This is on a QWERTY but with only 2.5mm of travel and 15g actuation force. I can't go beyond around 120wpm on a Model M.
