Computer Science vs. Computer Engineering

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-02 13:07

I'll assume most of you programmers have a CS degree. However computer engineering is starting to interest me more, mainly because I hear engineers earn way more. In the course catalog both degree programs share a lot of classes, with CS focusing more on languages and CE more on hardware. I'd like to code, but I'd like a good salary too. Also (dare I ask), where does the title "software engineer" fit under, CS or CE?

Get CS + EE. SE fits under niggers.

Stop right there.

where does the title "software engineer" fit under
It fits under ``Programming when you can't''.

Oh god. Who cares? Just write a blog and you will get hired because you write a blog. That's why most famous bloggers are also /prog/ers: Xarn, Christopher, Samuel, etc.

>>4
They're also unemployed.

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-02 14:35

>>5
Christopher is far from unemployed.

Xarn recently painted and re-designed his bedroom, which was (IMO) quite a good job. Xarn is an active blogger and makes millions of dollars a day from his collection of porn sites that he developed.

A good job? It's boring!

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-02 15:57

I think he meant that the fact that he did something to his bedroom was a good job.

I hear engineers earn way more.
You will never know true happiness.
I'd like to code, but I'd like a good salary too.
Yep.

OMG.  Seriously.  Wow.

I pity your ignorance, but for some reason my pity grows beyond the basic "fuck you newbie!", so I'll give you some real answers:

Computer Engineering - does NOT focus on software, designs hardware & uses HDLs.  You know, engineering actual computers.

Computer Science - theoretically about the abstract bullshite of how computers deal with information and solving problems.  You know, science about computing (not computers).

Software Engineering - theoretically about how to get abstract bullshite into real bullshite with actual people and systems.  You know, engineering actual software.

If your only criteria for which field of study you go into is the paycheck amount, then GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY INDUSTRY YOU MOTHERFUCKING BRAINLESS PARASITE!  GO DIE LIKE THE SUBHUMAN LIFE FORM YOU ARE!

Just pick up a catalog from any uni/college and look through the recommended curriculum for those majors. Should give you an idea of what they're about. >>11 summarizes them nicely too.

Software Engineering might be easier to understand if you think of it as Software Architecture or Software Design instead. That's essentially what it's about. Planning and designing how a piece of software should be built so it's robust, easy to maintain, etc...

As for "mainly because I hear engineers earn way more"... see >>10 >You will never know true happiness.

I'm majoring in CS just for shits and giggles. I would not want to do this for a living.

I'm planning going to grad school to be a librarian.

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-04 3:36

is it true that all computer science majors took AP clac in high school?

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-04 3:50

>>14
I didn't. Just regular calc. But I didn't pay any attention anyway.

>>13
Ugh... but that means you have to deal with library patrons.

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-04 4:49

>>14
Considering that only the US and Canada even have AP classes, I doubt it.
Though from what I can tell, AP Calculus covers about the same things as we saw in basic Mathematics in high school anyway.

>>16
Where the fuck does Canada have AP classes?
Not at any of the schools I've been to, nor my friends, nor any school I've heard about on local/national news

If you work in anything but game development or shitty gruntwork IT/DBA, you'll have a good salary.  However, I don't think you belong in this field.

Go away, tripfag.

Your ignorance of your own education system doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Not all US schools offer AP classes either.

Who's the desudesudesu.org guy? Samuel?

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-04 10:54

>>21
Taro.

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-04 10:57

>>22
I want to make a thread listing all known /prog/ers, but it sounds like the kind of thread that will just turn into a shitfest, with people making allusions to /b/ (when it comes to 4chan discussions, comparing people to /b/tards is akin to comparing them to Nazis).

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-04 11:10

>>23
There's only Xarn and the rest of #sicp, the two Christophers, the Sussman, and Taro anyway.

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-04 11:20

>>24
Also all the people from /jp/. I saw HMA Meme Fan posting in /touhou/@desuchan, that faggot.

SAoVQ and 4-ch also overlaps a bit with us.

Out of the top of my head:
Xarn
Christopher
Taro
!WAHa.06x36 (easily identified by his BBCode HTML failures)
MrVacBob-sama
Eksopl
Anonymous of Russian Federation
Anisearch.net guy
HMA Meme Fan
Don (uguu.org)

Pretty sure I know more, but those were the ones I could remember right now.

To the best of my knowledge, many of those aren't individuals.
It'd be interesting to have a /prog/con. We could invite the Sussman and Leah Culver to speak.

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-04 11:48

>>25
That doesn't seem right. There's way too many people on that list.

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-04 11:52

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-04 11:55

>>28
Well, WAHa posts once in a blue moon. And MrVacBob is just world4ch's moot.

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-04 11:59

I have a feeling we lost WAHa a while ago to /code/ but it's not like it matters anyway because there are only two other people who post here.

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-04 13:03

>>25
I'd still be posting on /jp/ right now if not subnet ban...

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-04 13:49

>>32
There's always /touhou/.

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-04 14:35

>>25
Also Trevor, I suppose. Huh, we're actually a lot. This is destroying the “/prog/ is just 3 people” myth.

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-04 14:52

>>34
I always figured Trevor was a /pr/ faggot, not a /prog/er. Is this not the case?

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-04 14:54

>>35
It is. >>34 is just confused.

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-04 15:28

>>35
No, Trevor made the piece of crap known as Kusaba and recently turned into a __FIOC__ lover, but he's still an order of magnitude above /pr/ faggots. He just made that P2P thread.

I always hated him because he's indirectly responsible for the flood of shitty 4chan clones ran by 11 year old kids, but considering he posts at SAoVQ, he can't be that bad of a person.

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-04 16:27

>>37
Even italians post at SAoVQ.
