OS War

This is to settle it all.

Vista Sucks.

Name: Anonymous 2008-07-20 2:00

Well, GNU/Linux is a pretty good operating system. Designed by a guy from Finland.

This was never a contention.  Even employees at Microsoft reverted to XP.

Name: Anonymous 2008-07-20 3:12

The BSDs are missing huge chunks of functionality, Mac OS is child-proofed for latte faggots. The only thing this discussion comes down to is which Linux distro to pick.

Name: Anonymous 2008-07-20 3:33

The BSDs are missing huge chunks of functionality,
Yeah, sure, that's why they have Linux binary compatibility while no Linux distro has BSD binary compatibility.
The obvious conclusion is that the BSDs have all the functionality that Linux has, but Linux doesn't have all the functionality that the BSDs have.

Well, GNU/Linux is a pretty good operating system. Designed by a guy from Finland.
GNAA/Loonix was not "designed" by anyone. It happened because GNAAFags failed to write a working kernel so some guy from Finland who didn't really know anything about kernels hacked one together for them.

"There are, however, some Linux-specific operating system features that are not supported under FreeBSD. Linux binaries will not work on FreeBSD if they overly use i386™ specific calls, such as enabling virtual 8086 mode."

What is a GNAAFag?

Linux binaries will not work on FreeBSD if they overly use i386™ specific calls, such as enabling virtual 8086 mode.
i don't think that's really going to be a problem for anyone, no sane person would do that. and you'd have the same problem with linux on x86_64 anyway.

No, I wouldn't, because I use a free operating system and packages built for my architecture (even from non-free sources).  What I do want from unix is netfilter - iptables is shit!

Name: Anonymous 2008-07-20 4:41

I still don't understand what is a GNAAFag. I don't understand the stake of the GNAAFags in Loonix.

Name: Anonymous 2008-07-20 6:29

What I do want from unix is netfilter - iptables is shit!
pf is superior.

>>11
GNAAFags wanted to make an OS. They made a bunch of broken replacements for good BSD code. Then they realized that writing a kernel was too Hard for them. So some guy from Finland hacked up a slow, buggy, incomplete kernel for them and called it Loonix.

Name: Anonymous 2008-07-20 7:48

All software sucks. All hardware sucks. Pick something that hurts the least.

Linux has become absolutely amazing, have you tried the last Ubuntu?
You can plug in a USB drive or a printer into your computer, and your computer notices it without requiring you to build and install new kernel modules. In the case of a USB drive, it also auto-mounts it. And with printers, they went one step further, and made it that most applications can send documents to it.
They did so much work that now, for computers that include an accelerated video card, they default to using acceleration for the display.

Name: Anonymous 2008-07-20 9:19

Vista is pretty good.
Linux is decent but to keep up-to-date applications you will run into a lot of problems (Gentoo/LFS).
BSD is not really that good for desktop, last time I tried them.
Solaris is very good if your PC is supported.

Name: Anonymous 2008-07-20 9:37

If you need a reason why you use certain OS, you are doing it wrong. I've been using XP for some time, then switched to check out Vista, and now I'm using Ubuntu. I can't really say why, it just feels smooth and easy to use, and I don't need a tangible reason to use something that I'm simply comfortable with.

Because userspace binaries are all the functionality an OS could have, right?
I'm talking about basic OS-level facilities.

If you need a reason why you use certain OS, you are doing it wrong.
No, if you don't have reasons for the things you do, you're doing it (everything) wrong.

Linux doesn't have pf because it has iptables. Linux doesn't provide binary compatibility with other operating systems because most of its software is open source and by its nature trivial to compile on other systems anyway. Linux does have jails, and has had them for ages.

Neither do the BSDs at this point.

I'm a BSD fag (for ports, unionfs, pf, free porn, etc), but to be entirely objective --

* Shit support for video cards.
* Shit support for flash.
* X11 is a reeking pile of shit.
* No working SD card drivers (going through umass works fine though)
* msdosfs either isn't doing FAT16 or FAT32 right for me (probably an issue on my end).
* ZFS was a useless and stupid endeavor.

Aside from random usability issues (what are you, an Ubuntu faggot?) FreeBSD is one of the bleeding edge fronts of operating system development. We've got some awesome shit in the works -

* vimage -- bring jails to the next level with network device virtualization.
* Topology-aware scheduling.
* BSD-licensed porn in the base distribution.

I can't fucking wait.

OS X is great, I just wish Apple stopped fucking with it and trying to make everything so Playskool.

I don't really mind having to resort to BSD tools to get my shit done, but when I'm forced to hack shell scripts just because Apple thought putting a IP and Subnet inputbox on the Internet Sharing dialog would "confuse the average user" pisses me off a lot.

God fucking dammit, Apple, "Advanced" buttons won't hurt anyone. The "average user" isn't going to click there and change numbers he doesn't understand, and if he does, fuck him. Stop making me waste my time, one-size-fits-all just leads to shit that "Just doesn't work." You make excellent tools and then make them inflexible on purpose so they ultimately become useless to anyone over the age of 10.

Look at Time Machine. That stupid thing is so unobtrusive and easy to set up that it actually got me to make backups, something I never did for non-vital data. But then I had to repartition my backup disk because Time Machine will eat up your entire backup partition and there's no way to put a limit. And this is not a technical limitation, they fucking crippled it because they felt that they knew better than you. Seriously, what's the point of making the user jump through hoops and hurdles just to perform basic changes?

I hate their face so much. The fact they make the best Unix flavor available for the desktop and then do so much shit to it (or neglect it to work on hipster crap like the iPhone) just makes me want to break things.
