The customary language in this electronic BBS is English. Would you mind communicating in this language?

I'm a BSD fag (for ports, unionfs, pf, free porn, etc), but to be entirely objective --

* Shit support for video cards.
* Shit support for flash.
* X11 is a reeking pile of shit.
* No working SD card drivers (going through umass works fine though)
* msdosfs either isn't doing FAT16 or FAT32 right for me (probably an issue on my end).
* ZFS was a useless and stupid endeavor.

Aside from random usability issues (what are you, an Ubuntu faggot?) FreeBSD is one of the bleeding edge fronts of operating system development. We've got some awesome shit in the works -

* vimage -- bring jails to the next level with network device virtualization.
* Topology-aware scheduling.
* BSD-licensed porn in the base distribution.

I can't fucking wait.

Also, has anyone gotten Valgrind working on RELENG_7? I think I'm missing the "LOAD THE SPECIAL KERNEL MODULE" step but I could never figure out what fucking module I was missing.

There's no need. Just comment out all the lines of code that give your algorithms actual entropy, and it will be happy.

How about Fedora?

Fedora of dicks.

This is why I missed /prog/.

I did not miss /prog/. In fact, during the interval in which /prog/ was down, I got a job programming C, started dating a girl, and aced 2 final exams. Coincidence? I think not.

Too bad you made that all up to make yourself feel better.  You're the kind of person that would F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 while it was down.

Since /prog/ returned, I got fired, discovered my would-be-GF has terrible acne scars all over her body, and failed the rest of my exams.

OS X is great, I just wish Apple stopped fucking with it and trying to make everything so Playskool.

I don't really mind having to resort to BSD tools to get my shit done, but when I'm forced to hack shell scripts just because Apple thought putting a IP and Subnet inputbox on the Internet Sharing dialog would "confuse the average user" pisses me off a lot.

God fucking dammit, Apple, "Advanced" buttons won't hurt anyone. The "average user" isn't going to click there and change numbers he doesn't understand, and if he does, fuck him. Stop making me waste my time, one-size-fits-all just leads to shit that "Just doesn't work." You make excellent tools and then make them inflexible on purpose so they ultimately become useless to anyone over the age of 10.

Look at Time Machine. That stupid thing is so unobtrusive and easy to set up that it actually got me to make backups, something I never did for non-vital data. But then I had to repartition my backup disk because Time Machine will eat up your entire backup partition and there's no way to put a limit. And this is not a technical limitation, they fucking crippled it because they felt that they knew better than you. Seriously, what's the point of making the user jump through hoops and hurdles just to perform basic changes?

I hate their face so much. The fact they make the best Unix flavor available for the desktop and then do so much shit to it (or neglect it to work on hipster crap like the iPhone) just makes me want to break things.

Leaving out the word ``overpriced'' may seem like it's giving it too much credit, but everyone knows it's implied anyway.

Too much talk about kernels, not enough talk about OS's.

The Gnu OS is superior.

Name: Anonymous 2008-07-29 14:12

GNU brings freedom, because it doesn't work and leaves you free to do other things.

In the period when /prog/ was dead, I took some time to visit some other programming communities. Now I regret having spent over a year here.

I woke up this morning with a strange idea: Someone should create an OS that uses GUIDS for all the entities that it manages, and call it GUIDOS.
