Good day, /prog/

In order to share our EXPERT PROGRAMMING creations with each other, I suggest we use this up and coming file synchronisation service:

Jesus mothercock, get the fuck out.

There were only three remaining invites. What was the other name you used?

SORRY

BACK TO /b/

Name: Anonymous 2008-04-22 21:21

>>18
No, I daily browse it.
For /b/ it was inevitable. Eventually the media would learn about 4chan, mention it, people would become curious to see the community of which these funneh memes originated from.
For /prog/, that is not the case. Not everyone is interested in programming. In fact, only a few are, and a large portion of them are stupid java/etc programmers. Code monkeys that generally don't have any insight on what they are doing. /prog/ didn't have many of them, and because they were generally mocked, they either didn't make posts or just left the board.
The problem ofcourse comes from faggots seeking recognition, or some sort of power/control over the board.
You know, the "cool kids". The guys who have "invented" most memes, who generally have large influence over the board, who have others to praise them, etc.
You'll generally find these faggots in communities with names; such as reddit, IRC (#sicp is an example of faggotry), and of course other places.

HURRR DURRRR Anonymous is legion.
Back to /b/, please

Name: 20 2008-04-22 21:37

>>21
No. I don't believe in the whole "anonymous is legion" bullshit.
It's generally another thing that namefags created to have a certain control over a community.
look at faggots like splongcat, actually, fuck it. I only know splongcat because I randomly read an article about him on ED.
Tl;dr he's a faggot on IRC telling people what to do and who to raid. He's pseudo-intellectual, and he'll spout nonsense about TCP or hacking when asked. All in all, a clueless pretentious (possibly underage) name-faggot.

I think you're just attempting to troll me, since you didn't sage.
Any reasonable poster would sage such shitty thread.

Sorry to make you cry, but there are 3 members on the box thing right now and here are their display name:

Anonymous (me)
anon anon (some other guy)

There is also not a single post made by a namefag in this thread. So much for saging for faggots seeking recognition, or some sort of power/control over the board.

Name: Anonymous 2008-04-22 23:40

Also, I have never been on IRC, so I consider myself cleaner than you are regarding namefaggotry.

I don't think names are a good thing. Their only use is vanity/pride/self-image in this kind of board.[1] Tripcodes are useful for validating an individual poster within a thread. I believe the best setup is forced_anon with optional secure (per thread) tripcodes.

I agree. Also, I think the automatic IDs were a good thing.

Name: Anonymous 2008-04-23 6:47

>>27
I sometimes miss them and I agree vaguely, but not fully: Automatic ID is identified by default, as opposed to Anonymous by default. I'm not sure which is better. Opting out of Anonymous is done by adding a tripcode. Opting out of identity is done by adding sage, in Shiichan's current model. One does not necessarily want to sage a thread just because he wants to be anonymous. Do you know what I mean? There is a problem with that. If opting out of an ID was just a checkbox, then that problem would disappear. Coming back to which is better out of anonymous-by-default or identified-by-default; it's hard to say. It didn't seem to hinder /prog/, did it? I have a vague feeling that the quality of posts was higher because of them, but I don't have any reasoning behind that.

Name: Anonymous 2008-04-23 7:16

Holy quad shitvermins, a decent discussion albeit not related to programming.
>>26

Well, yeah. Names give power to trolls. Look at RedCream and Wokon for example.
Thought, I do enjoy some posts from RedCream, Wokon was just that: A faggot. Now he's some sort of meme, occasionally posts with a tripcode and says something really retraded.
The problem is, the posters that claim to be Wokon are not really Wokon, but attention-seeking faggots.
Think of them like the doujin or CP posters on /b/. It's just an easy way to attract posters.

But honestly, I think we just shouldn't care as long as there are still the so called quality posters lurking and posting, and decent discussions, of course.

>>28
One does not necessarily want to sage a thread just because he wants to be anonymous.
No, even with the ID you are still anonymous, however identifiable and unique.
Why one wouldn't want to be identified in a thread?
The only reason I can think of is trolling or forcing opinions, memes and other things.
With IDs, it's a lot easier to spot trolls.

Name: Anonymous 2008-04-23 7:30

>>29
No, even with the ID you are still anonymous, however identifiable and unique.
Sorry, by “anonymous”, I mean not verifiably the same poster as a previous. Not “anonymous” as in “without name”. I think you know what I mean.

The only reason I can think of is trolling or forcing opinions, memes and other things.
With IDs, it's a lot easier to spot trolls.
Indeed, I had considered this myself. Being “unverifiable”, it is easy to force opinions or memes. However, and I think this is a serious point: posts should be regarded by the content of what is said, not by the authority of a name. As Shii says on his page, not-anonymous forums encourage users making authoritative posts and people just take their word for it or don't argue with them, rather than judging the content of the post itself. So, let's consider an example: I've just made a post that has been agreed with or strongly disagreed with, and I now want to reply within the same thread to an unrelated post; with IDs enabled this encourages people to judge my post by my identity and less by the content of what is said. This is not good. Of course, if stopping trolls is more important than this then IDs are better. And one can also make guesses that two people are the same. But it is just a guess. Perhaps this example is a rare case, indeed, it might be. I'm undecided. Sorry about the convoluted nature of my post.

Name: Anonymous 2008-04-23 7:44

It is important to note that with IDs and tripcodes (referred to hence forth as identities1), what is certain is that:

  1. Two posts with the same identities are made by the same entity2.

The following is not certain:

  1. Two identities are different people.

1 Indeed, even SICP tells us that an object is something with identity, and identity means “not something else”.
2 The same IP address, session, or person.

Name: Anonymous 2008-04-23 7:45

with IDs enabled this encourages people to judge my post by my identity
IDs are temporary (change every day) and unique to each thread.
I don't see how anyones post could be influenced by them.

That Dropbox thing is actually a pretty slick application. Thanks for the invite, OP, but I'm not going to use it for /prog/. It's got much better uses than that.

IDs change depending on IP address. You change your IP address and you get a new ID.

>>30
Both, a regular forum and an anonymous messageboard have both pros and cons. Saying one is better or worse is personal opinion.

YA THINK?

Regular forums are certainly worse for me, especially other programming forums that I occasionally come across while searching for something - there's usually something I want to say because the info there isn't correct, but then I look and see I have to register to post, so fuck it. If there is something that must be said/registering is required to download, I'll go find an account at bugmenot and only if there isn't will I go to the trouble of creating one (and submitting said account to bugmenot after use, for all the other anons out there)

There's also the excessive namefaggotry and power structure in regular forums, where everyone just seems obsessed with sucking off the mods since they get banned if they don't agree with them. Not to mention shit like avatars and sigs which sometimes take up more space than the content of the posts themselves.

It's interesting to see that over in Asia, there are more anonymous boards (e.g. 2chan). I think this is because North America and Europe are very self-centered societies -- it's always about you, the society seems to gives the message that you are somehow special and that you should flaunt your identity to everyone. On the other side, the society is more toward us and we (this might be where the anon is legion thing actually makes sense).

Likewise, I've never used forums. All that reputation, it's just nonsense that I don't want to read or deal with. The anonymity is what drew me to 4chan in the first place.

You'll generally find these faggots in communities with names; such as reddit, IRC (#sicp is an example of faggotry), and of course other places.

I think you've got a point there. I used to visit #sicp because I thought they were trying to find a solution to the "cancer". Bullshit, they made me read a haskell begginer's tutorial.

Actually, it was just a bunch of namefags that like to display their own desktop. It may be "pseudonymous" (aka, fake names), but they were still identified by hostnames.

So #sicp was pointless, and the best way to fix /prog/ is anonymous advocacy, or something similar

Name: Anonymous 2008-04-23 18:16

#sicp is an efficient cancer containment tool; anyone ridiculing it is an idiot.
