Does being a programmer make you lonely?

Name: Curious Wantabe 2007-09-21 0:35 ID:WTPX/sP8

I want to start programming in college to maybe make some video games in some sort of collaborated effort... in addition to writing software or whatever for a company. I'm wondering if this job will make my personal life suffer greatly because its so time consuming and a single person activity.

make some video games
turn back now while you're still in college
get into pharmacy or something

You will suffer at programming if your main reason for doing so is making faggotry pokeman ripoffs.

I just wanted to make an MMORPG thats low scale and SNES style with some basic 3-d graphical effects.. I'm pretty decent at pixel art... would I be better off getting a programmer to do it for me?

I always figured that programming is such an important part that if you want it done right you should do it yourself.

I'm trying to decide what kind of career I want. I'm more on the side of programming being a side hobby or finding someone to do the programming and I do the art/design.

Software development in the real-world is anything but ``personal activity.'' I'd go as far as saying that if you're anti-social, or have bad social skills, programming is not for you.

Just to elaborate, software dev isn't about hacking away at code in isolation. You generally work collabaratively in a group environment, and hence communication skills are vital within your group as well as between yourself and stakeholders.

Only if you can actually do it right.

So... I'm guessing get a programmer interested in my idea or something.

That doesn't mean you'll have a personal life, though.

MMORPG? Slow down, buddy. Before you can work on such large-scale projects you'll have to grow accustomed the the language(s) you're using and practice simpler things first. Game development isn't as easy as you'd like to make it sound. If the first thing you plan on doing is trying to do is make an online RPG with little or no prior experience you'll fail hard.

There are thousands of vidya gaem players who think their ideas for a new game are innovative, but really most aren't. Why do you think someone would spend time helping you when you really don't know much about this field and don't have much to offer? I doubt you could get a decent programmer to help you out with your project here unless you paid them.

Programmers are merely secretaries in the overal scheme.

The designer comes up with the idea, breaks it down in a design document.
Gives the psudocode/flowcharts to the coders.
The concept art shit to the art fags and the musical concept to the sound engineers and then proceeds to cash his paycheque and snort cocain off a hookers ass whilst the coders impliment the design.

If you want to be a coder expect to work long hours, get paid a meagre wage and have almost no say in the overall design concept.

And maek vidya gaems is NOT nearly as fun as it sounds.
Fact 1: in the commercial world you will have no say in what your making.
Fact 2: you will be making a game you loathe, hate puzzle gaems? thats what you'll be building.
Fact 3: Even though you loathe it now thats nothing compared to how much you will six months down the line when youve been working with it for 18hrs a day.
Fact 4: Your an expendable member of the team, any fucking college dropout can sufficiently code a few functions and they all thing "MAEK VIDYA GAEMS" is an easy career choice.
Fact 5: VIDYA GAEMS CODARZ get paid less than coding anywhere else in the industry.
Fact 6: If your still reading this and not horrified at the prospect of becomming yet another broken desk monkey then your pretty much cut out for the industry.

Reviving the VN thread: anything VN related goes.

After having finished ML series right after reading through Muramasa, I decided to change the pace and started reading LOVELY x C^TION. The "datesim" part's implementation is underwhelming. Can't really say much about the story since I just started reading it a few hours ago, but I'm already in love with Amagase. Moe overload

Is anyone willing to explain the story of Umineko as simply put as possible?

Don't change these.
