Don't get me wrong, this doesn't apply to child molesters. Child molesters had the choice to act or not to act, but they chose to act. I'm talking about the pedos that are stuck the way they are, and can't change themselves, but they haven't done anything to hurt anyone else yet.

We don't know what truly causes pedophilia yet; the brain's a muddled mess of really complicated things, and we just haven't made sense of it all. What we can agree on though, is that it's not the pedophile's choice to become the way they become. Either they're born this way, or something in their life causes them to become this way, and no amount of therapy or treatment will change who they are.

Still, pedophilia has no physiological basis like homosexuality, it is not an instinct someone is born with, it is a fetish that occurs due to psychological conditioning. As you rightly say "the brain's a muddled mess of really complicated things", there are a variety of reasons why someone will develop a fetish because everyone has different life experiences, however the process of associating something with sexual urges, whether consciously or subconsciously, and repeatedly reinforcing this association is the same.

Not all fetishes are wrong, someone may have a harmless latex fetish or a chubby fetish, the problem is when someone allows their fantasies to develop into something that is not practical in the real world, either creating sexual tension when they cannot carry them out or causing problems in the real world when they do. Our culture encourages people to seek out adult males and adult females for relationships and sex, there is also an overwhelming amount of adult male and adult female sexualized material, most pedophiles find adults they are mildly attracted to, they then develop new associations between adults and sex, eventually their fetish atrophies and we never hear about them. The pedophiles we do hear about are those that for some reason could not do this and have some sort of problem understanding their sexual desires, possibly due to mental illness or personality disorders, due to a highly traumatic experience or due to exceptional circumstances.

Yes. I'm not too familiar with Australian law (aside from the fact that I know you guys don't quite have First Amendment equivalent free speech legal protection that we have here in the States), but I'd imagine enforcing existing law would be adequate.

I'll admit this to be a bias of mine, being an American, but I would be against such a list regardless on principle, as it can set quite a destructive and dangerous precedent on the freedom of speech on the Internet. I certainly wouldn't want my government to start tearing apart the First Amendment (despite their best efforts at tearing apart other parts of the Bill of Rights and the institutionalization of "free speech zones" in the psychical offline world), and I wouldn't want Australia's government to do the same to their citizens. There are already enough governments and societies in the world that haven't gone through their own age of enlightenment period to join the rest of us, yet.

No argument there. I have no problem with law enforcement taking down websites that are either selling or giving away gratis media of child abuse, I take no issue with that. What I do take issue with, though, is governments overstepping their bounds in order to facilitate doing so.

Pedophilia is not a fetish. It is much closer to a sexual orientation than a fetish, but most correctly, it is a paraphilia. This is why they are practically incurable. The pedophile who is married will still molest his children, even though he can have sex with his wife. There is no way to "treat"  pedophiles to full recovery; it is an integral part of their personalities: not even castration has been shown to be completely effective. The only solutions are those that are permanent.

While some may emotionally jump immediately to >>1, I don't agree. Pedophiles's are unfixable fuckups, but it is often better to avoid bloodshed when possible. If the punishment is death simply for being sick in the head, then they will try to get to do as much as they can before they are found. That's the thing about the death penalty: you've got nothing worse to offer. The pedophile would be , after molesting a child, with the options of letting the child go, or silencing her/him. If the punishment were the same for both, he would rationally choose to kill the child. After all, dead men tell no tales.

Instead, I suggest that the punishment for being attracted to children be institutionalization. It will give our scientists much better resources to find out exactly what makes a pedophile, while still protecting children from them. Those who have molested children will be imprisoned in a more prison-like place, while those who have not yet can be afforded more privileges than their more repugnant counterparts, such as better food or less work hours. Even more perks can be given to those who turn themselves in, rather than wasting police time by posting on 4chan.
