What did the Nazis do that was "Evil"?
Lose a war.
Also, Germany had lost the previous big war, and already been branded as «eeeevil, mmmkay?». Add a new sort of leader, alien(ish) symbolism and a realistic chance of getting Germany properly back into the Great Nations Club, and we have a combination that Cannot Possibly Be Good™.
On a side note:
When Soviet Bloc schools were to teach kids why Nazism was such a Bad Thing, they had a small problem;
- not a democracy: Nazi Germany.
And Soviet Union.
- one strong man at the top: Both.
- censorship: Both.
- no political freedom: Both.
- kz camps: Nazi Germany. And Soviet Union (Gulags)
- political prisoners: Again, both.
And so on.
So they landed on the one unredeeming feature with no glass house in sight: Symbols. Swastikas, SS uniforms etc.
So, unsurprisingly, when the Iron Curtain came down, those kids had no good reason to avoid Nazism, cos who exactly was it that had said the Nazis were evil? Right, the communists! And we all know just how truthful
they were.
