Think about what you just said. If we're all equal, then I guess the only wealthy will be the gov't elites, the ones who have power over us. The entire mid-east is in revolution right now because of the "everyone is equal" way of life. That is, everyone is equally poor and miserable. Honestly, I'm not a socialist but when a businessman is not paying his employees enough, the distribution of wealth over time changes dramaticaly and the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Terminaly, this is a system that would collapse under it's own weight because very few people would end up with all the money. And naturaly this would bring consumption to a halt.

By redistributing wealth through fair taxation, the state can maintain itself without hindering the growth of the poor and without taxing money that would normaly be spent to cover basic needs. This in turn makes society more productive, more creative and less hostile for the individual.

Tell you what: take a week, or even just a day, and don't think about money. Do some work just for the heel of it: not for money. Clean your garage, maybe, or make something with your own hands: just for the satisfaction of a job well done.
Then decide what you want your goal to be.

I want ot be happy and comfortable. This means that I don't want to stress everytime I get ill, I want proper healthcare that will cover all my health needs (even dentist). I don't want to stress if i get sacked from my job, I want the state to supply me with pocket money while I'm looking for a new job. This way the state has true interest in fighting unemployment. I don't want to stress if I can't afford an appartment, I want the state to supply me with a temporary appartment for some months until i sort my shit out. And I don't want to stress when I have to go to work and I haven't got anyone to take care of my child, I want public kindergardens. Of course, I don't want to save or borrow money to educate myself, I want a full public education system. Given all these, I can plan my life better. Accidents and bad times cannot damage me much. I feel safe. This way I can have proper education, have children without worrying too much about feeding them and educating them. For a society with services like this I would be more than willing to pay high taxes. Because these taxes are practicaly a life insurance, a health insurance, education savings etc.

All of the above happen in the countries mentioned earlier in this thread. I see them as example societies. You may call this socialism but seriously, it's nothing more than proper management of the state.
