Of course Northern Africa has had success in developing that region. I cannot really say much of the same for the Sub-Saharan region with the exception of South Africa of course.

Example: A teacher I talked to once (from a country much whiter than Amerika), told me about some maths classes he'd done for adults (dunno the English name for that type of program, but it's got to do with finding them new jobs when the old one's gone to shit).

At some point they'd covered fractions. Everyone'd had fractions in elementary school, so they should know them. However the elementary school had fucked that up, so in reality, they'd been learning that they could never understand fractions. And sure enough, there was zero progress.

Then they moved on to trigonometry. Which no-one'd had in elementary. Or later, for that matter. No-one had learned that they couldn't do it, so everyone went on to get straight A's. Srsly.

Point here being: Learning that something cannot be done, is the most dangerous learning of all. It stops all intelligent thinking dead, faster and more permanently than anything else, even religion. Also, it's damn hard to un-learn.
And all it takes is a few years in a fucked-up excuse for a school.

(Notice how I avoid using words like "liberal", since too many of those words mean different things depending on who you're talking to. For starters, "liberal" with whom? Individuals? Or corporations? Those contradict each other.)

- There are air-heads that won't let pupils excel, except through excessively formulaic methods in dogmatic schools (English translation: "get good this way only, or else stay down and get dumb like the rest").
- There are money-heads that insist on treating everything as a business that has to pay off, in cash, right fkin now, or else we pull the plug on you. Schools are "less important" to those people.
- I don't see missionaries helping much either; their main concern, by definition, is to have as many as possible accept Jesus into their lives, so they can go to Heaven when they die... in five minutes, since they neglected to inform you how to avoid malaria, or how to maximise crop yield so you can sell the surplus and afford ways to improve your life (medicines, better agriculture tools...), or anything you'd need to get a proper, secure job, etc.
