What shapes one's politcal view?

Name: Anonymous 2008-06-07 21:11

Is it upbringing?
Social/Economic standing?  (and does it change as you get richer/poorer?)
Personal values?
Education? (how, when, where, and by whom)
Propaganda and Memetics?

I'm inclined to believe that most people's political views are based on what they believe will benefit them the most personally.

If you're poor, chances are you get a horrid education, and chances are your parents too were poor and horribly educated, so that makes you a likely candidate to believe in retarded stuff.

I should add, in this situation they don't follow views that will benefit them most personally, because they simply aren't aware of that it won't. Be it religion, scare tactics, loads of crap from media... That's why modern democracies fail - it turns to a game of populism.

Even the smartest people don't know from what they'll benefit the most.
Unless you're materialist that is. Considering what you wrote in >>2 you probably are.
Bo back to bed, Marx.

>I'm inclined to believe that most people's political views are based on what they believe will benefit them the most personally.
Agreed.
>it turns to a game of populism.

Why the personal attack?

No, I just said something about bad education and lack of knowledge affecting thinking, and to this you immediately replied with baww marx, which sort of shows the bad education etc. etc.

Don't take it personally, it's just the way things are.

They are all factors but not significant compared to education and  partially upbringing. Education has played a major role and my upbringing was sufficiently open for me to value objectivity. I don't think this is the case for the majority of people.

That said most of my education was worthless in developing my objectivity, most of my ideas were formed reading books and playing video games not directly associated with logic or science.

You completely misunderstood what I wrote.
Try again.

I don't think so. Read again and face reality.

Nine out of ten people got it right with you being the tenth guy.
You're just not trying it.

Don't change these.
