What shapes one's politcal view?

Is it upbringing?
Social/Economic standing?  (and does it change as you get richer/poorer?)
Personal values?
Education? (how, when, where, and by whom)
Propaganda and Memetics?


I'm inclined to believe that most people's political views are based on what they believe will benefit them the most personally.

I should add, in this situation they don't follow views that will benefit them most personally, because they simply aren't aware of that it won't. Be it religion, scare tactics, loads of crap from media... That's why modern democracies fail - it turns to a game of populism.
