I wonder if the number of rapes would go down if prostitution was legal nationwide...

I think it'll increase it.

I think it would decrease it. I am thinking a lot of men who turn into rapists are sex-deprived (possibly due to ugliness, or lack of social/dating skills or something?) If prostitution was legal, there'd be a legal way to get some without raping someone for said cases. I think it would go down. What makes you think it would increase it?

Prostitution should be legal because it is the prostitute's body. They should be allowed to do whatever they please with it, including sell services. Further, clients should be allowed to buy said services provided it is voluntary from both sides.

legalized prostitution, meaning state regulated, is far safer and far less detrimental to the community as a whole than illegal prostitution. Legalized prostitution, or red light districts, are set out of the way from places where children go, like schools and parks, and are regulated by the government. Sex is treated like any other service, with tracable monitary transactions, and medical screening. The legalization of prostitution would mean less crime, if not for the simple fact that pimps would be non-existant. The lack of pimps would mean no fighting between pimps, no ownership of the girls to any one pimp, no hunting down of those who dont pay the prostitues (or date any of them), and no drug trafficing that can occure with the already illegal flow of money. In short, red light districts are safer, cleaner, more organized, and good for the community if located out of the way of the prying eyes of children. We have no problem with strip bars or lap dances, so it's absurd to think that a woman can be payed for grinding her hips against a guys crotch, but it's suddenly immoral and dirty for them to have actual sex.

It would be illegal to spread STDs and pimps would have to supply medical examinations, insurance, condoms etc.. by law.
exactly. just as the porn industry regulates its preformers for STD's and health and safety, so should it be for legalized prostitution.
i dont see a single reason why we shouldn't do this.
it would:
- lower crime
- lower the amount of abuse toward prostitutes
- lower the number of rapes toward both prostitues and women in general.
- lower the spread of diseases
- lower the ability for minors to get a prostitute (it would be required by law for them to refuse such service, or risk being kicked out)
- lower the overall exposure of prostitues and their profession to minors (keeping red light distrects away from public places and schools, etc...).
plus, i'm sure the government would love to have a finger in that honey pot. consider the economic incentive for taxing the worlds oldest profession.
and it can be run differnt ways, either state run, private escort services with state/governement regulation, or both.
And on a side note, considering the number of soldiars coming back from war, it'd be nice to have a bit of a moral booster when they get home. america will have never looked so good ;)

"i dont see a single reason why we shouldn't do this."
It will make it look like the government is sanctioning immoral behavior.

we dont say that to any of the dozens of countries that DO have red light districts, like most of europe, so why should we be concerned? If anything i think they'll welcome a bit of sanity over here.

Legalizing prostitution will least control the prostitution population, preventing STDs and wrongful abuse by pimps.

does anyone here *not* support legalization of prostitution? LOL

me. it sends a message that prostituition is accepted by society and imo it shouldn't be.

Injustice should be frowned apon by society, if the woman concents to sex and is not coerced or threatenned into making the decision it is not injustice.
women and men alike have promiscuous sex all the time. the only differnce with prostitution is being paid for the service. it's no ones business but the prostitues whether or not they should be having sex for money. it's private, it's discrete, and it doesn't hurt anyone.
Men do this all the time, but in a differnt way. a man will work a normal job, go out and pick up a girl after work and have sex with her. the man is still having promiscuous sex, and still getting money. so the real problem people have is just the idea of money coming from sex. even more so because it's a woman. most peoples' notion of prostitution is sexist, and skewed toward an outdated point of view that women should not 'spoil' their bodies on a whim, yet men can.

I was thinking more along the lines of work permits and stuff.
We sortof have prostitution right now, its just not blatant. Plenty of people's relationships are centered solely around money. (Why some women get referred to as 'golddiggers'?). The only main difference is that now, women date rich guys because they know the man has money, and will buy her lots of shit, and in general make sure she is happy and taken care of. Implied in the deal, of course, is that the rich guy will get to have sex with said woman.
The only difference (to me) between this and prostitution, is that prostitution is a *direct* deal, with a set price layed down beforehand. The couple puts a price on the sexual encounter and pays for it outright, and that's it, unlike the former.

I mean like the govt. will have to regulate it to some extent so it's sort of active in prostituition unlike women dating rich guys etc.

Yeah, the way we have it now, the woman feels like less of a slut.

I think the idea of expanding legal contracts is more egalitarian than making 1000s of bureacratic gay ass laws. It is very straightforward. Marriage = you inherit my stuff if I die, we both have to raise our kids and if I adulter you get my stuff.
No bullshit, it's cold, but this is only because it is the cold hard truth, that is what happens if someone adulters in a marriage, that's what you knew when you married someone, right?

we already have child support laws whether you are married or not

It reduces them no more than a man being a construction worker. Both of them are relying on their body for their survival. There is a demand for both their lines of work. There is no shame in either. The only reason you would think it bad is if you think women's bodies are more sacred or pure, which is sexist thinking.

Prostitution lowers men to the status of being mere pawns of instinct for exploitation. It is humiliating to men and should not be legalized.

Prostitution empowers women with the ability to extract $100s from men for 30 minutes of lying on their back. It is an important source of income towards female college and university fees and should not be legalized.

this would be valid if the women were forced to take up this profession. they're not, they choose it. no one is pointing a gun to their head saying 'suck me off and i'll give you money'.
Prostitution doesn't degrade women, it's an outlet for an otherwise unacceptable behavior. no sane male would ever treat a woman like he may or may not play out with a prostitute. prostitutes deal with this behavior voulentrarily, and it's good that they do. better to them, where both parties agree that it's fake and shallow but no harm is being done, than to a regular woman in a real relationship.
It's a womans choice what she does with her body, and it's no fault of her own that men think the way they do.
It's a crude analogy, but think of a prostitute as a punching bag, taking the hits, the frustration and the fantasies of a man and directing them through a safe outlet without harming anyone who isn't prepared or doesn't concent to that kind of behavior. if we had no punching bags, where would we outlet our stress and frustration? yeah, on other people. so if we dont have prostitutes, or at the very least easy permiscuous women, what would men do with their pent up sexual frustration? yeah, on other people (ie: rape). and this is just the prostitution of today. think of the benefit of having it regulated and organized?

Pushed into it how? By needing money? She can be a temp then if she doesn't want to be a prostitute.
