Is business ethics an oxymoron?

Name: Anonymous 2005-12-30 4:30

Is "business ethics" an oxymoron? Do the dictates of capitalism curtail the positive effects of individual ethical behavior? Discuss.

I try to look at every business decision from a moral standpoint, which is why I have no money.

Bullshit, in a Smithian capitalist state only those who are too stupid to compete or are immoral end up with no money. You are either living in a completely communist in which case you have better overthrow the government quickly with as much passion and drive as the Swiss, culpepper minute men and William Wallace put together or you are too stupid to compete and thus have no money.

I believ the US government is a communist state, that the situation is extremely serious and if we don't act now we will all die of starvation. WE MUST OVERTHROW THE US GOVERNMENT AND IMPLEMENT A MERITOCRATIC CAPITALIST TECHNOCRACY WHICH PAYS TAX ONLY TO A POLICE AND MILITARY IN ORDER TO PRESERVE JUSTICE!

Well, it is possible to survive in business, and do well if you're moral and fair.  Only problem is that you have to rely on other's to be moral and fair as well.

So all succesful businesses involved mafia like extortion rackets, intimidation and illegal enterprises etc etc?

How about this, how about when you can prove someone has committed a crime, they have committed a crime. I think this would be more logical than just grabbing a certain group and declaring them all to be criminals. That would be a very national SOCIALIST thing to do!

What kind of business are we talking about?  If I buy something cheap at wholesale and sell it at retail, I'm making money on other people's lack of connections, and I'm not charging the price I paid because I want money.  If I hire workers and then manage to make a million, I'm not going to give them a percentage of the profit because I want the money for myself or my business.  I'm not going to give to charity unless it saves taxes or promotes an image.  The only virtue of business is greed.  Not having greed makes you noncompetetive and stupid.

The only limits to greed are laws, such as banning the sale of drugs, bootleg merchandise, etc.  Despite laws, people continue to sell illegal goods, because risk brings reward.  Risk can also be hidden in seedy communities or countries that don't care.  If risk isn't in what you're selling, it can be in your practices, such as hiring kids in third world countries who make almost nothing, while you profit greatly in the US.  Greed is a common sense that feeds business.

On the contrary, if you invested those millions back into your business your business would have more cash to spend on advertising or discount on a few items to help compete with companies that spend all their money on hiring whores and crack for their CEOs!

I'm at the startup stage, where I NEED to sell illegal goods to fund a legitimate, ethical, long lasting business.  This is what bothers me.
