Rock: lyrics are unoriginal... Rap: lyrics based on real experiences

rock can have lyrics based on actual life events as well. What I like about rock is that they don't restrict themselves to talking about merely their own problems, whereas rappers mostly tend to talk about how they got shot or what happened to them (at least from what I have heard). Rock can focus on themselves, or politics, or a group of people, or all three even.

Rap can talk about the same thing. It's just the crappy mainstream rap that ppl listen to that talks about themselves getting shot or what not. anyways...most of music is crap anyways...the line between rap and rock is pretty blurry. Both genres inspired eachother to make pretty decent music

I honestly don't care if I get banned, but I must say this. Rap is the most ignorant form of music in existance, it is created by niggers that slowly declined in a white-man ignored part of our towns. 'Rap' has only created such things as 'Crumping', which is a disgusting form of 'dance' created by some black bitch with an overbite the size of my fucking fist, and other assorted bullshit. Why anyone would bother putting effort into listening to this is queer. Rap not only sucks, but only sucks in 'One Genre', you can call it old school, etc, but it is still rap and still sucks.

Rock lyrics are "unoriginal" you say? Funny...seems everytime I hear a rap song, all I'm hearing is "paper", "bithes", "niggas" and "bling". Wow...very original music....and that is TOTALLY life experience right there. Life experience no one gives two shits about.

I generally dislike both genres but if I had to pick one it'd be rock. I personally think rock displays more talent and rap is just African-Americans who think they're smart because they can talk fast and swear in creative ways. Still, I haven't actually listened to much rap except for accidently encountering it on the radio or tv so I don't really have a balanced opinion on the topic.
I saw Ice-T doing rock. If only everyone else would switch.

Popularity is a marketing thing, not a talent thing.
There are tons of talented "rock" bands that are not popular at all but you'll find them if you listen to college radio and get music from sources other than television, commercial radio and pablum magazines like Rolling Stone. Find venues and dyi spots that present bands that actually go out on a limb with their creativity.
Or maybe you live in a small town in which case you're probably fucked for good live music.
Neptune (http://www.misterrecords.com/neptune/) comes to mind right now because they are playing a show here soon. Most of their instruments are homemade. Their guitars have these metal necks that look and sound sick as fuck. They seemlessly combine these trippy and grating noise sections with rocking fucking rhythmic dirges. They're really tight musicians and have obviously written all of their noise parts which might otherwise sound like improv. My only major problem with the band is that the singer's voice can get really annoying at times. I definitely prefer the band when they are just doing instrumental stuff.
And thats just one group.
And no, I don't work for them or anything.
I hope I'm not the only one in this thread that listens to music that isn't just a slick commercial product designed for optimum market penetration. Musicfags unite.
Songs on commercial radio are 3:30 long ads for a disgustingly overpriced compact disc that one buys as a fashion accessory.
Well, then there's the the classic rock stations which are an entirely different demo.

Your all forgetting one important factor! Fans of rap/R+B/hip-hop are the people in the crowd who are vocal! They only care for them selves. If you say one thing against rap from across a room, they will take the time to cross over and bitch you out and call you odd names for "dissing" it. It could be YOUR opinion! They DO NOT CARE! They are the loud ones who think they can do what ever the fuck they want, and they get away with it because the average person does not like getting bitched at by some black dude or some confused white dude who thinks he's black. This is the interwebs. Things go on here that rarely go on outside at the mall. Here we can have discussions like this and not worry about someone pulling that fucking race-card on you. I've had many blacks try to pull the race card on me. They tried. But the truth can be damaging. (TL:DR?) Like the copy-pasta in /b/ explaining how/why rap is degrading, thats true. It is degrading. Whats really bad is there is a radio station here with a 12 song play-list. All rap. 12 songs. 12 degrading songs. The loud mouthed fans of rap want to hear more of this dreck, so the idiots who think they have talent make more of it. Men talking about doing this to a chick, the chick moaning in the B/G.... Think about it. Just think. Is this really something you enjoy listening to? Its not music. It's not talent.
Sure, there are some rock songs/bands that suck and some people could agree with me there, but I listen to a rock station all day at work and the music I listen hardly contains degrading music. Thanks for reading.

Rap seems a lot easier to do than making a rock song, but...
On both sides, lyrics can be way too cliche and annoying as hell.
Likewise, on both sides lyrics can be interesting and entertaining.
most people who listen to rap haven't heard enough sides of rock to appreciate it, and not enough people who listen to rock have heard enough sides of rap to appreciate it.
Am I being too gray?
honestly, I kind of like both. n__n

I Hate Rap by Confererate Railroad
hate rap, I hate rap

Talk about a generation gap
I don't turn my cap, I don't grab my lap
I don't do like that 'cause I look like a sap
I hate rap, I hate rap
And it don't go good with beer on tap
I hate the beat, hate the rhythm
But I love that melody they put with 'em
I hate rap, I hate rap
One nerve left and it's about to snap
I'd rather hear a little Chihuahua yap
I don't walk that walk, I don't flap that flap
If I talked that talk my lips would chap
I hate rap, I hate rap
And it don't go good with beer on tap
I hate the beat, hate the rhythm
But I love that melody they put with 'em
INSTRUMENTAL
I hate rap, I hate rap
It would rip Van Winkle from a nap
I'd rather be woke up with a slap
Than try to sleep through jive so cheap
They have to bleed a bunch of crap
I hate rap, I hate rap
And it don't go good with beer on tap
I hate the beat, hate the rhythm
But I love that melody they put with 'em

I myself have fallen into this world where the rock/rap debate is going on. I am your average white boy, but I have a pretty broad taste in music.
I don't really like the mainstream, because most of it sounds like someone shoved a microphone up their ass and recorded the noises in there.
What I hate more are the hypocrites saying that all rap and hip hop is bullshit. I happen to like DMX, Obie Thrice, Tupac, and Busta for that case. I won't say eminem because he is WAY too overated by white people.
the mainstream rock now is what many people call "emo". There is no such thing as an emo genre, it just receives negative criticism from those people that think they're so bad ass. and I see those rap lovers saying that all rock is emo. If anything, I'm better off listening to classic rock than most of this new shit they call rock. Few bands have hit me alot though, which are The Strokes, The Killers, and Panda.
If you want to hear a good blend of both worlds, listen to ska. I recommend Sublime, The Toasters, and Catch 22.
What we got to do is unite, what we should really be concerned about is Raeggaeton, I hate that shit with a passion. Hispanic generations evolved into booty shaking whores dancing to the SAME EXACT DRUMBEAT IN EVERY SONG!!

my favourite frap song goes "RAP RAP A-RAP RAP RAP"
Rock actually requires skill in Music Theory (chord progressions, keys, those dots and marks on lined paper are called notes people...), and the music can be way more broad in color and mood.
Rap can be good, but mainstream rap sucks, end of story.
Rap is just wank c'mon where is the talent in that, whereas rock/metal there are a group of musicians no just some wannabe gangster sat at a pc with an outdated version of logic and a microphone.

"Rap is dead, in the mainstream at least."
Lil' Wayne, Chamillionaire, Nas, Eminem, Busta Rhymes, Common, Redman, Bone Thugs n Harmony, Dr. Dre, Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West and Papoose just off the top of my head are all dropping/dropped this year. Mainstream rap is far from dead.
GTFO internet-backpacker fags.
rap is just as bad as pop these days in terms of churning out generic crap. Hip Hop is so much more innovative. But fot the sake of the actual arguement, I'd have to say rock.

The thing I hate most are the ignorant people who base their opinion of rap on what they see on MTV or hear on the radio. I also hate it when the same people say making rock music takes a ton of talent, and say making rap music is easy and anyone can do it.
Ok so playing an instrument is so hard? How come I see every 10 year picking up and playing guitar so easily. I've never seen a 10 year old mixing and producing beats.
As for lyrics, c'mon. Lyrics in most rock songs are simple, the performer doesn't even need a wide vocabulary. Writing and performing lyrics to a beat isn't simple at all.. you know making sure the words rhyme, make sense, and don't sound lame.
I dunno, I guess it kinda looked like I bashed rock here.. Don't get me wrong, I love rock.. I used to love it and hate rap.. but ever since I opened up my eyes to other genres and actually took a good look at real rap my opinion has changed.

general rule of thumb: if it's on MTV, it sucks.
some black guy told me he hated "white people music" and that i should too (i'm a beaner.)
i don't think he ever heard of Funkadelic, or Jimi Hendrix, or BB King.
New age rock is terrible. Bands make songs that are 2 - 3 minutes long, make 10 that sound alike, and call it an album. Rap is even worse...a repeating beat over and over, one phrase repeated over and over, with additional sexual innuendos sprinkled in. The best rock bands are the ones that started pre-90s, with some exceptions (System of a Down). Bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Rolling Stones, Kiss, Guns 'n Roses is what rock should be and should continue to be.

Wow, there's an extreme amount of ignorance going on here. Both forms of music each have their own subgenres and nuances that create subtle differences between the two but in the end they're just about the same.
Hell, if you don't believe that the genres are basically interchangeable listen to the song "Hey Ya" by Outkast and then go look up the any of the acoustic versions done by rockers. It's the same shit in the end.
Give me NIN or nothing in rock. Rap is shit. Real life experiences? Like we give a shit. Any musician can create fictuous lyrics based on events going on in their lives, so suck a dick.
If Rap lyrics are based on "real life experiences", the group who made that song "wait(the whisper song)" seriously need to re-think some things and stop spreading disease.

My god this is some awesome music! Very good experemetal industrial!
I know what you mean. Sad thing is though that, if you live in a small town like I am, it gets soo bad that even contemporary fads like "emo" and "indie" are seen as just as strange as experemental or street performers. Infact anyone who actually lisens to music besides in the car or while doing someting is seen as negative.
Even in the band I am in, I am the only person who has a favorite song that has NOT been a hit single!
