I listen to nothing but jrock (well, almost). Visual bands mostly.
Some of my favourites are X Japan, Moi Dix Mois, Schwardix Marvally, Malice Mizer, 12012, Vidoll, hide, Aliene Ma'riage... There are simply too many good bands to chose a few favorites. I usually listen to "heavier" VK, but there are other lighter bands too that I love, like L'arc~en~Ciel and Janne da Arc.

I <3 X Japan. I teach at a junior high school in Japan, and during lunch time and cleaning time, they play music, and you can count on them playing at least 2 or 3 X Japan songs each week. Foreign Sand, Forever Love, Orgasm. It's Awesome. With a capital A apparently.

Foreign Sand isn't X Japan though. That was a song Roger Taylor made together with Yoshiki. Gotta love it anyway. <3

I like a lot of J music, my favorite jrock bands are The Pillows, Going Under Ground, Art School, Go! Go! 7188, Asian Kung Fu Generation, B'z, and just a ton of others.

X-Japan is the only real Japanese band I listen to, though they're more "J-Metal".

It's hard to put X Japan into a genre. In the early years, they played speed-metal, then hard rock, and in the last years it was more like alternative rock.

Dir en grey are my favorite group, but I also love Inugami Circus-dan, Guruguru Eigakan, Miyavi, Nightmare, and Go!Go!7188. In addition to typical J-rock, I also like a lot of Japanese punk/hardcore groups and a bit of J-rap...

THE PILLOWS!!1!one They're the only Jrock I really like. Most of the rest just seems to get on my nerves for some reason or another, but I can listen to The Pillows all day long. I don't know why.
My brother invented the phrase "omg!!!!11one" (and the word "interbutt").

Where would everyone place Nanase Aikawa? I know her later stuff is really more pop than anything else, but her earlier songs had a lot more edge. I`ve seen her termed as both Jpop and Jrock. Anyone else`s opinion?

Personally I'd put her Jpop. Yeah, alot of her older stuff had a sort of rock edge; that's why she was on Motorod's label instead of standard Avex Trax. However, considering the fact that she doesn't really have a set band, and is just one person with someone else writing her music, definately Jpop. Still not bad though.
I like alot of the more mainstream, v-kei-ish groups, like L'arc, Luna Sea, and SHAZNA. Especially SHAZNA.

While I don't call it Jrock, I guess Japanese rock-type bands that I like might be:
Inu, Friction, SS, Ultra Bide, etc. My list can go on and on for quite some time.
I also like 60s/70s psych and acid folk like Les Rallizes Denudes, Zonou Keisatsu, Kazuki Tomokawa, Morita Douji, Maki Asakawa, Carmen Maki, etc etc etc.
Then there is tons of late 70s/80s underground punk/free/psych stuff and tons of more recent psych/free stuff.
Hell yes! The Pillows are the best! Though they're a bit more punk-ish than straight rock.

For anyone that doesn't know:
The Pillows are going to do an American tour. Their first show is at a South By Southwest Festival in Austin Texas March 16-19. After that they're going to Chicago, L.A., San Francisco, and Seattle. There is nothing* that could stop me from going to Texas to see them then again in S.F.
*except the 700+ it'll take to get there, buy a music pass, and a hotel room

Many "jap" groups often tour in many different countries.

The Pillows touring the US? About damn time.
By the way, anyone else thing the "J-rock" label gets used far too generously? It seems like a bit of a stretch to lump bands like Asian Kung Fu Generation and Sex Machineguns under the same umbrella.

"j-rock" = "japanese rock" = "rock music from japan"
sex Machineguns = japanese
asian kung-fu generation = japanese
therefor, sex machineguns & akfg = j-rock.
Name:

I'm aware of what "j-rock" means, thanks. But calling Sex Machineguns and AKFG "j-rock" and leaving it at that is like me taking Exodus and the Pixies and calling them "A-rock". It's not necessarily incorrect, but it is misleading.
Name:
Anonymous2004-12-30 4:48 (sage)
Both the Pixies and Exodus are American rock bands. I don't see what the problem is. I wouldn't just call any of the bands in this thread just "rock" bands just as I would not call the Pixies or Exodus just "rock." But to keep it simple, it might as well just be rock for now.
Save the specifics for sub-genres.
Name:
soakrates2004-12-30 15:27
The problem is that while Exodus and the Pixies are technically both rock bands, they are vastly different, musically speaking. One is thrash metal, while the other is more alternative/grunge. It's pretty much the same case with bands like Sex Machineguns and say, the Pillows. Mentioning them in the same breath and calling them both "j-rock" is just misleading. Would you recommend Anthrax to someone who's a big Lemonheads fan?
Name:
Anonymous2004-12-30 19:38 (sage)
alternative, metal, blahblahblah. It can all be considered rock. But saying "rock" is of course the most general you can get. I don't think anyone is actually considering any of the bands mentioned in this thread to be at all similar.
Name:
soakrates2004-12-31 0:12
To be fair, I wasn't trying to point the finger at anyone in this thread. I guess I just wanted to sort of subtly bring up something that annoyed me. And yeah, it can all be considered rock, but all I'm saying is that there's a point at which the term "rock" is too general. Oh well, agree to disagree I suppose.

There has been tons of amazing Japanese music brought to America. Stop looking for shitty pop.
here: X Japan, Dir en grey, ROUAGE, Cali//Gari, Luna Sea, hide, SaDS, Plastic Tree, Transtic Nerve. i don't really go for the gothic stuff like Malice Mizer, but i do enjoy Lariene and the occassional Moi Dix Mois song.

Jrock is living proof that the 80's "world music" fad should have died with the 80's.

Melt-Banana aren't Jrock, but they are awesome.

I think it's mostly because it's been copied in its entirety. Really, the only group I like is Seikima II, and it ain't for their music but their commercials and strange cameos.
Jrock is simply 80's rock with less obsession with sex and drugs. (which, come on, is what made most of'em fun.)
Name:

Melta Banana is a part of the Japanese underground but not really Jrock. They tour the US a lot and I've heard they are more popular in the west than in Japan.
so JUST because they tour the west they aren't Jrock...
Does this mean we should consider Beck unamerican because he tours Japan allot
Name:
aarima2005-05-11 21:56
if Beck sang in Japanese all the time and not english that wouldn't make him straight american rock now would it?
Let's say a bunch of american dudes form a VK band. They sing in japanese, crossdress and put on makeup. Would they be "american rock?"

No, Melt-Banana aren't JRock because they AREN'T JROCK. They are whatever genre you want to through in along with "noise." They are quite far from "rock", other than the fact they use traditional instruments.

if they play rock, and are american, aren't they automatically an american rock group.
oh whatever ._.
