Giving anime a try

Name: Anonymous 2005-08-22 14:59

So all anime fanboys I know are faggots. And up to now I hated anime. And Dragon Ball Z sucks. But I thought to myself, if so many /b/tards like that stuff, there has to be something to it.

I want to give it a try. What should a noob watch?

Preferably something with few or no tentacle rape.

seconded on eva; eva is specifically an anime by and about otaku and by the end, doesn't really work in any other sense. (End of Eva Spoilers: director yells THIS GUY IS US over and over again for 90-some minutes) bebop rocks the fuck out though.

castle of cagliostro is probably both my favorite Miyazaki and my favorite anime movie. Possibly my favorite movie.

cromartie high and azumanga if you like really dry comedy.
hellsing manga if you like violence.

you know what rules? old sci-fi anime. get yourself some Matsumoto (arcadia of my youth, galaxy express 999, star blazers/yamato), some early Gundam.

Cowboy Bebop, Hellsing, Ranma 1/2 (what got me into anime), and Monster are all good ones to start out with.

Most people who hate anime only know about Dragon Ballz and the other shit they have on Cartoon Network and Fox which anyone with half a brain hates.

And after you have been intrigued, seen the first few series, became accustomed... lock yourself up someplace safe for a night and go through all the Eps of Serial Experiments Lain in on swift going. It'll change your brain.

Lain is a poor man's David Lynch film.

go for hentai porno movies, great intro to the world of anime

Watch Haibane Renmei and cry like everyone else did :(

I watched Evangelion first, and it's intelligence and intrigue made me continue to seek out other anime, in hopes that they'd be similar.  Memorable for me: RahXephon, Wolf's Rain, Chobits, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Full Metal Alchemist, etc.

Gankutsuou is the best anime series I've ever seen; based on the story of The Count of Monte Cristo. GONZO studio seems to produce a lot of enjoyable stuff.

on the subject of Rahxephon i find it funny to know end seeing people bash this series because they believe it copys from Evangeleon, where as i havent seen Evangeleon properly, Rahxephon and Eva are both great shows

At least today, it's fag for anime

haha Evangelion is the way to go >_>

If you're serious though, Princess Mononoke FTW!

Yeah, I agree, I don't really see how the "copy" logic works, as they are completely different.  Really, the only similarity is a giant robot piloted by a teenager; the rest of the anime is different entirely in content/action.

Name: Anonymous 2005-09-04 3:59

first anime i ever saw was "X". I was like under 10 years old

Name: Anonymous 2005-09-04 10:36

The best show with a giant robot piloted by a teenager is Giant Robo The Animation.

Don't watch anime. watch hentai instead.

LAIN LAIN LAIN!

Its very easy for a non-otaku to enjoy, totally trippy, and has extra bonus points for throwing kickbacks to the early days of the web, so if you're a techie (or even just mildly into computers) you'll love it.

Name: Anonymous 2005-09-18 13:32

Lain is a really bad choice.

Name: Anonymous 2005-09-18 14:34

You should watch Neon genesis evangelion, that's a good first anime

Name: Anonymous 2005-09-18 15:53

I'd like to know how the person who posted this thread got along with Cowboy Bebop

Name: Anonymous 2005-09-19 16:52

The first anime I watched all of was Lain.
I saw Tenchi before that, but, well, it's no Lain.

Hah.  DBGT was so bad that Akira Toriyama had sold away the rights to it before it was made.  He didn't want anything to do with that anime; it sucked that much.

UPDATE.

It is I, the guy who originally asked for advice.

I have so far watched:

Cowboy Bebop (including movie) - Excellent, nice storyline, easy to follow and funny
Evangelion (incl. End of Evangelion) - Really liked the religious weirdness, it had a huge amount of emo shit though
Ghost in the Shell (first movie) - It was ok, but I couldn't really get into it, going to watch the second movie anyway
FLCL - What the fuck...? Gave up after episode 3.

Going to watch Serial Experiments Lain next. By the way what is it with people in anime making vaguely sexual references and everybody gets like huge eyes and their faces turn red and whatever? That is not funny, Japan. No no. Less of that, please.

So based on that, where should I go after I've watched Lain? Because I don't really have an idea.

Watch:
Excel Saga
Ping Pong Club
Cromartie High School

"...and gets huge eyes and their faces turn red and whatever..." WTF are you talking about?

My recommendations, in no particular order:

Fushigi Yuugi
Noir
Any movie by Hayao Miyazaki
Magic Knights Rayearth
Bubblegum Crisis

Dragon Ball Z:FAIL

Cartoon made in Japan isn't animu.
Animation done in manga style is animu(It no need to be made in Japan).

i.e. Spirited Away isn't anime. Just japanese cartoon.
