No. Go do some googling, get a PDF of Baron's Japanese grammar.

I am Japanese and welcome you!

At first, most of Japanese can speak English a little, but we are shy enough to ignore you if you looks lost your way or in time of trouble.

Please start talking yourself; and then we can hear you.

I give you magic word in Japanese “Suimasen“ means excuse me, may I ask you?, I am sorry and more refer to context.

Anyway, i am sure you can enjoy your trip without learning Japanese.

During my last trip not even a single person spoke English. Not even in restaurants. I think OP would do good to get some basic Japanese going.

Its so sorry. I thought we study basic level English in compulsory education. lo

Don't be. It was mostly my fault for expecting people from an entirely different country to speak my own language.

Next time I'll prepare at least the basic stuff.

As a tourist, just pointing and making noises can get you far in most countries. :-P

The vast majority of Japanese are required to take English for up to 8 years but only a select few actually CHOOSE to know and use it beyond that. The others simply don't progress and, as a result, retrogress. I imagine,if you're an American, you took Spanish or German or the like for 4 years in high school. If you didn't continue your study, would you be comfortable using that language to communicate with a foreigner? Probably not.

So, yes, most Japanese understand the most basic of English but they're unlikely to speak it outside of making jokes with each other or the most unavoidable situations with foreigners.

Don't change these.
