sup /lang/ I was thinking about learning a nordic language, no particular reason why, just bored. Which in your opinion would be the best to learn? I leaning towards norwegian since it's apparently related to swedish and danish, so this could potentially make it easier to understand them with more ease, plus easier to learn later in life.
Opinions? Rants? Wild accusations of homosexuality?

Norwegian would be a nice choice, as well as Icelandic. Not much use for either, though.

norwegian is the best choice if you don't have a real preference, because it leads more easily into danish and swedish.

Old islandic, since you probably want to read the Edda and stuff.
DK, SW and NO are all the same language, very easy.
IS is fvery hard, more than German.

The newfaggotry when it comes to general language scholarship is astounding.
German isn't, strictly speaking, nordic, but it is related because all nordic languages are also Germanic languages, as is German. Nordic Languages are a sub-branch of Germanic languages.
Finnish is not a Nordic Languages. It's actually not even an Indo-european Language at all, which is what makes it so interesting. And no, Finland isn't part of Scandanavia, it's part of general "Norden" though. The people are generally Lappish, which aren't, strictly speaking Nordic, but have interacted with them in all of history. But, when push comes to shove, it isn't a Nordic Language, it's not related in the least.
Now since this isn't /b/ I don't think any of you losers are trolling, but seriously, learn your languages before opening your mouth and saying stupid shit.

Finland is a Nordic country, therefore Finnish is a Nordic language. I could say that Finnish is a Scandinavian language, even, since it's widely spoken by groups such as the age-old skogsfinnar, who happen to live deep in Scandinavia.
lrn2logic, idiot. Languages are not determined by (modern) political borders, but rather, by its history, development and relationship to other languages. You don't know anything about studying languages, and you just revealed that. Finnish is NOT indo-european, and all Scandinavian (Northern Germanic) languages, by definition, are.
Finnish is a Finno-Ugric language like Estonian and Hungarian

You and most people here are confusing geography with language families. There are no "Nordic languages," a Germanic subbranch like that does not exist (at least in English terminology).
When people say a language is Nordic, they mean it in a geographical sense, just like when they say a certain language is Asian. So, a Nordic language is a language spoken in the Nordic countries, which means that relatedness is irrelevant.
Finnish is NOT indo-european
As a Finnish speaker I certainly know that Finnish is not Indo-European. You don't need to reiterate and capitalize to convince me.
You don't know anything about studying languages, and you just revealed that.
And you obviously have poor reading comprehension skills.
Also, when "Nordic" is used as an adjective, you could call Finnish a Nordic language as well, in the same way that you could call it a European language.
ad hominem, we love you! It's not even about the argument anymore, is it? It's about your ego. Also
Okay, let's suppose Finnish is a Nordic language, just so you can walk around going "I WON! I WON!" Hey OP, do you want a "Nordic" language that has no connection to other Nordic languages? Wouldn't it make sense to learn one of the languages that's connected to the other languages, and is more likely to contain the mythology you might be interested in? Or would you rather learn a language belonging to a completely different family tree?

>User:Yvwv added the words "Nordic languages" to the article introduction not that long ago
BEFORE this thread was made and anybody could even fathom somebody being as stupid as you.
