For someone who only knows English, what does everyone think is the best supplimentary language to learn. I'm thinking German, since it's used through a lot of Europe (or at least gives one a better chance of communicating with someone from some parts of Europe) and is similar to English.

German is used in Germany. Dialects that you will absolutely not understand are spoken in other countries. Still, German is rather fun, go for it or VOTO POR RABBIT-CHAN!!

German is only spoken in Germany. And it's completely useless to learn this language because most germans speak english quite well. Learn French, it's used in a lot of african countries and french people themselves can't speak anything but french.

Bah, learn Spanish, out of all those mentioned its the most widely used, though it takes some getting used to the differences between Mexican and Spain spanish. Overall though its a really easy language to go from English to.
And the argument of "only this country uses it" doesn't really apply, I mean look at Japanese, only one country uses that yet people still learn it anyways. Plus its a fun langauge and the easiest out of the asian ones, at least thats my experience...

Japan has a much larger population, they suck at English and they have a lot of worthwhile culture (in the eyes of a wap). In contrast, Germany has bratwurst, nazis, philosophers, beer and manly women.
A lot of people learn a language because of some interest in a particular country, not for its overall usefulness. If you're just going for usefulness Spanish, Arabic or Chinese would be my top bets
Not "much larger", and both Japan *and* Germany have 'worthwhile culture'

Much larger, and of course they do, just that most people aren't interested in it.

Korean is way easier to learn and that goes for a lot of south-east asian languages as well. Japanese has a very simple grammar but this simplicity becomes a pain in the ass when it comes to semantics.
Anyway >>10 got a point, I don't see anything exotic or appealing in Germany's culture. At least, when you learn a language, you should have a little interest in the country. And not just go for it because it's easy to learn.

depends what you want to learn it for. spanish is the only non-english language spoken uniformly over an entire continent (south america), plus many other largish chunks of other continents (europe, africa). if you're going mainly for europe tho, and not the world in general, french or german are probably the way to go.

I'd go for German, Japanese or Chinese. German is by far the easiest to learn out of the three, although they'll teach you nothing but grammar, which can be a real bitch. German is used for quite a lot of scientific and technical literature, but yeah, you don't learn it for the culture. The Japanese have a big economy and suck at English. China is extremely dynamical right now, and they suck at English even more than the Japanese. Romance languages are for losers, as is Korean. Like learning Tahitian or something. I'm hesitant about Russian.
