So how many of you have actually considered making freeware (or at least shareware) games?
What are some of your ideas (don't give away everything, a genre is enough)?

I'm making a 2D single-player RPG which I'll distribute for free if/once I finish it. However, I'm a terrible programmer so my game engine's full of holes right now which will take a while to fix.

I make all my games Free, as in freedom not beer.

Make it open source and use an open source engine. Nothing irks me more than needless waste of resources and open source is all about reuse and making superior software.

Why, so other people can make minor adjustments to my game and claim my work as their own? I think not.

Only if you place your code into the public domain. Most open source licenses require people to maintain copyright notices. Misrepresentation is frowned upon by the open source community.
I'd love to make a 3rd person shooter. The only reason I wouldn't make it retail is that then I'd have to worry about piracy. The problem with freeware/shareware is that any game is immediately looked upon as "casual," and not as a serious game.

That's true. Then again, I am interested in making such games and that is the very reason. Fadboys won't touch and taint it unless casual becomes the next fad.

Have you played Cave Story? It's a freeware platformer remiscent of 90's platformer game but it manages to get rave reviews to this day.

Yeah, I played Cave Story, it was pretty cool, but I didn't get sucked into it. It was okay, but it didn't quite hold my interest. I was thinking more along the lines of a 3D 3rd person shooter, like Max Payne or Star Wars Battlefront.
