Jhelom is an Island town. The island is rather small but you shouldn't get lost on it for too long. There is a way off, via the moongate but if we're planning to meet up, I would recommend staying on it for the moment. Especially because it has a lot of useful things.
Jhelom is where we're planning to meet. IIRC, you should have started somewhere near the red X on this picture. I'm going to draw some places of interest but not the entire town.
UO uses text commands for certain functions. In order to access your bank storage, you need to go near the bank (which should have banker npcs inside or nearby, they would have names such as "Joe the Banker") and say "bank" without the quotes.
Also, if you get attacked inside town, say "guards", again without the quotes.
To interact with NPCs, you usually need to single left click on them once which will bring up a menu or say things like "vendor buy" "vendor sell".
Also, the teleporter in the picture will take you to other sections of jhelom. It is possible to get back to the main area via another teleporter.
Also I would suggest avoiding the graveyard at the moment.

If you want to select your own skills upon character creation. Select the "Advanced" option during character creation.
Here's some basic newbie info.
Double left clicking your character brings up your paper doll.
Once you have your paper doll brought up, you can double left click your backpack near your characters feet to open your bag. Drag and drop shit in your bag, it functions like an IRL bag almost.
Drag stuff from your bag onto your character like the knife.
If you want to pick stuff up from the ground, drag it onto you or into your bag.
Hold left click on something to drag, and release left click to drop.
To close menus, right click them.
Whenever you use a skill or take part in an action which might benefit a skill, your skills will increase.

Press alt + c to enter warmode. Press it again to exit.
(run/walk by holding right click)
Once in warmode, you can double left click a living target to consider yourself "attacking them".
This will get you killed in town if you attack something with a Blue name. Because towns have guards.
Blue names = innocent
Grey names = criminal
Red names = murderer
If you attack something/someone who has a Blue name, this will flag your name grey temporarily.
If you kill enough players, this can make you go red, which means you can no longer enter towns with guards.
I would suggest trying to avoid going red for now. =P

Press alt + s, this opens your skills menu.
Press the arrow things on the left side of the skills menu to open and close their respective lists.
Some skills can be used from this, (there's a way to assign skill usage to hotkeys but don't worry about it for now).
Skills which have a blue circle next to them usually need to be activated by clicking on the blue circle. Some skills have specific requirements in order to use them. Like you need an animal target in order to use the taming skill. Or a piece of armor in order to use the arms lore skill.
Other skills can be gained through different methods. Like if you spend time fighting with a mace, you'll gain mace fighting and tactics.
Also, make sure the arrows on the right side of the skills menu are turned upward so you gain skills.

you'll need it for recalling(as in teleporting to the guildhouse or whatever) because recall uses 11 mana, you'll need atleast 11 intelligence.

Spellbooks never drop to your corpse, they will stay with you forever and ever.

Anyway, I haven't really played any other MMPORKs, so I don't really know what levelgrinding and farming for rares and shit is -- so I can't really compare UO with anything else.
UO is basically about either PvP or getting rich. For PvP you'll need some starting cash and some grinding for a day or two, then you're set for some fun. Getting rich is kinda hard, but it can be done -- I suppose IDOC hunting is one of the best ways of getting rich.

I have one thing to add, about the PvP: The PvP is rather unrestricted -- if you're outside of a guarded zone, you can just kill anyone you want to -- and there are tricks to kill people inside guarded zones as well. You also get to loot most of your victims' items off him, with the exception of certain non-combat items.

and you know all that tireless skill training you're doing, well razor has macros to automate it so you can skill up fast, and nobody has a use for a player who isn't already 7xGM since its so easy to macro
even better, your charactor *has* to have 100% magic resist as one of their skills, unfortuniatly the only way to get more is to get hit by it a million times which is boring, and macroing resist is extremely costly and can only be done in large groups when everyone knows what they're doing (unless you like coming back to your computer a couple of hours later to see yourself as a ghost because someone somewhere didn't have their act together)
also don't even bother trying to PvP unless you have binds and macros out the ass, and by the way all of your enemies have been playing UO for years now and *will* beat you no questions asked.
UO is an awesome game in concept, and almost got there in practice, but it has way too many little things wrong with it to be enjoyable
