Thanks for putting words in my mouth. No, I didn't say anything of the like. Lots of people can afford a 100 dollar game, and you do deserve reparation for your work, even though it wouldn't have been possible without Falcom's game, to begin with, you and lots of others still put lots of time and effort into it. That's why I'd hate to see it tainted with malicious software because of some personal vendetta you have against piracy.

This guy believes he's doing something so well that demands he get paid for his trouble. He claims that people who otherwise would have nothing to do with him and his translation for a game he has no legal connection to are causing him financial drain, and therefore he should be compensated for doing something that thousands of other guys/teams have done (and must do) for free over the past decade.
The very fact that he is gaining funds SPECIFICALLY over a registered product, and not just appreciative, voluntary donations for his hard work, is illegal.
There's a reason why community mods of games cannot be sold (but have a paypal for people who support the work), and the owner of the Intellectual Property can even shut down a project that was going to be free anyway, but also a reason why such mods can be sold (example: King's Quest 9 was a free ground-up game shut down by Vivendi, though later a deal is struck and "The Silver Lining" is becoming a full-fledged game), that is, legal collaboration with the original creator/owner of the product the offshoot is drawn from.
This douche's position is nothing like a retail outlet, he is not entitled to any money, no matter how "professional" he claims his translation is. He's basically the guy outside with the shopping cart, selling chinese subtitled versions of the product at a fraction of the price.
"no you dumbass, he isn't selling the game" is a groundless counter-argument. Without the game, his translation is worthless. With the game, his translation is still worthless. If he gives the translation out of good will, I'd donate 10 bux to his PayPal or whatever he has because that's pretty cool. But he's demanding compensation for something he is doing of his own will, with his own time; he isn't being forced into it, it isn't his JOB, he is not entitled to anything.

I don't know why you guys waste your time arguing over this. It's obvious "NightWolve" is an idiot when he doesn't even understand plurality in English. Why would you care about a translation patch from him when its going to be full of errors and malware that probably doesn't even exist? I mean, if he did try to make something, theres probably a 99% chance it would be an accidentally harmful payload that ruins his supporters computers.
Nightwolve hasn't said exactly what he did to it, but he claims to have loaded it full of viruses designed to target anyone who attempts to bootleg anything.
It's been speculated that his patch will fuck with your computer's registry, hiding a randomly-generated marker in it somewhere. And if it ever loses track of that marker, it'll assume you're a pirate and attack your computer.
Don't take chances. Don't have sex with people who you already know have STDs. Not even with a condom. Stay the hell away from Nightwolve and the Ys series he infects. There are plenty of other games out there that are easily worth your time.

Piss poor T-MEM (Texture-memory) is the main culprit. The N64 was just not built with 2D in mind at all. Hell, many 3d games suffered as well due to this flaw. Along with Nintendo being so stingy on microcode development.
This is why games like Mario 64 on DS looks nicer than Mario 64 on the N64 even though the N64 is still much more powerful.

I initially figured that what you're thinking of is texture filtering, not anti-aliasing. A quick look at the wikipedia article you linked, which does a pretty piss-poor job of describing the use of anti-aliasing in computer graphics.
Texure filtering takes the pixels used to render the textures, and adds new ones in between them, to smooth out the image and create the illusion that the texture is higher resolution.
Anti-aliasing is a similar effect, but applied to the screen. It's generally aimed at smoothing out the lines around polygon edges (for example, the line between Mario's blue pants and the yellow sand.) At the N64's rendering resolution of 320x240, AA is completely useless; there's not enough pixel data on screen, so the end result would be a hueg blurry mess. AA doesn't even look that good at 640x480, for that matter.

Well, few things I need to discuss again.
1. If you do not wish to recieve emails from us again, just add noreply@curse-x.com to your block list as this will be the only email
we use to send out Curse-X info.
2. For those curious about what was deleted in the 2 news about the new
section, what was said and still is in effect is, those who fill out
stuff in that section (Make sure to read the info post!) will get
subscriber status for helping Curse-X. The fill out forms require a bit more
typing, but get you in alot more easier for filling them out.
3. The main reason we had to add that section is because it costs alot
to host Curse-X due to the ammount of people that log in, I've tried
switching hosts, they always kick me off, so yeah, participating in that
new section and following the guidelines in there, will get you
subscriber status, when you do enough that we notice you. Right now theres not
alot of threads so now is the best chance for us to notice you :).
4. There will be a new program along with a BOTS ct and Legend of Ares
ct this week, now that the Anime site is going on a dedicated server I
can focus more time on Curse-X, no more stress trying to find a good
anime server :P

I got news for you guys. Konami owns the rights to Ys distribution in North America via an exclusivity agreement with Falcom. So in actuality, the patch is completely illegal and selling it is even more so. Most romhackers avoid fan translations of products known to be held legally by American companies or companies doing business directly in America. In Konami's case, both are true. Not only do they publish and distribute games in the US and Canada, they also have a business entity incorporated in California.
What does all of this mean? Nightwolve is being more of a douchebag than many of you have previously thought.

Yes, it's illegal to pirate the game if you did, and it's also illegal to translate or reverse engineer it if you don't hold the copyright to it. Nobody said it wasn't. That in itself tells you that he is seriously considering charging for it, and that the "$5 early access" is nothing but a very thinly veiled farce.
It's not professional. It's a fan translation. It's not (monetarily) valuable, it is worth nothing but jail time and fines according to the government, though I'm not disagreeing that it may be quite costly. Nobody that I know of said that it was NOT professional or valuable, however. In fact, if you recall, this all started when I made a comment on his website about how including malicious software in the patch to "fry your HDD instead of getting you thrown in jail," coding it to begin with, or even making such petty threats was pointless, immature and morally wrong in any way you could define the word moral. I also made comments disagreeing with his statements saying that "anyone who didn't pay for his patch pirated the game, anyways." Of course, that got me IP banned from his website, my comments removed, a huge wall of text as a response posted to the deleted conversation (gee, I WONDER why he deleted it?) and my email posted on his front page. Quite mature and "professional!"
Legality and morality are completely different. No, it's not legal to pirate software, some would say it's immoral as well, I personally don't care about what someone else does but if they assume I pirated it simply because I don't buy their fan translation... nothing more needs to be said about that. No, it's not legal to make a fan translation, but that is not immoral in my opinion. It IS immoral to profit off of Falcom's game, I'd say that was an opinion, but I believe it's a fact.
He is not accepting donations for his patch. He is selling it. Flat out. I don't know how you can argue that. 24 hours has turned into 24 months, almost.

I just scanned his front page, and the words "warez" and "butt pirate" appear no less than 8 times. Now, I understand that I could just be the "better man" and pass up the chance to speak my mind on this as I have and am on these forums, but... honestly, how can you take someone seriously in the least bit, when they use those words as an every day staple of their vocabulary?
I'm glad you're doing the translation and he's the chimp with the wrench behind the scenes, Deuce. Nobody could sum up the arrogance, ignorance, and well... overall incompetence better than he did in his last statements. Sure, he knows how to code obviously, he's not incompetent in that. The fact remains that he doesn't know how to (or refuses to, which is worse), write an entire post without including the word "butt-pirate," though, and obviously has delusions of grandeur about how he's so professional/important/amazed and astonished with himself and deserves to be paid for his hobby, however... which makes him a pretty incompetent human being in general, sad to say.
Personally, even though many of his donators emailed me the patch as soon as he posted my email address on his webpage, I refuse to use it because of the way he's acting about the matter. I myself never said the beta patch should have been leaked, however, as soon as my email was posted I had donators emailing me asking if I wanted the patch. Honestly, I really don't think it matters about perfection as much as how much money he will garner from it in the long run. I wouldn't be surprised if the YsF patch NEVER goes public, and I know the exact excuse he'd use for it too... "Pirating warez bastards." To something like that, I can only respond... "Hypocrite."
The only changes between the leaked version and the final version will be the readme, and whatever other "added surprises" he decides to include, anyways. It's been "99.5% complete" for months. Still it ain't public. I WONDER why.
Now just wait a few more days before the final release if you like to play the game with the most up-to-date patch, and don't worry about malware or other stuff, because you won't get that kind of program with NightWolve. He may seek for "revenge" but he'll never do something that will damage thousands of computers.
Honestly I doubt (hope?) he's not that stupid as well, but he probably shouldn't have threatened to, then. I, myself, have played through the game in Japanese and haven't even touched it since someone sent me the patch. Not out of fear, but simply because the game really isn't that bad in Japanese anyways.

Does any of this sound familiar? Nightwolve is the new Daniel Barras, collecting donations for something that isn't going to exist, and then making up excuses for not "being able" to work on the project.

You are a lone programmer who has reversed engineered Falcom's property and translated their words into English, and you want to be PAID FOR THIS.

Oath in Felghana costs $100.
You want $10 in donations for your patch.
Do you think that every employee at Falcom gets paid 10% of the revenue made off of the total sales of this game? These people put much, much more time into Oath than you have, and you are essentially saying that you deserve to profit exorbitantly off of their hard work.

Anyone else think that "Just go learn Japanese" is kind of a jerky response? (although I'm not surprised either; that type of reaction is kind of common on these forums---> also one reason I don't post much).
Anyways, I think most people posting here just want to reaffirm our interest and enthusiasm for this translation, nothing more. it's not like we're going to translate the damn game. We're just impressed that people do this type of thing in the first place.
