I've been avoiuding Dot Hack in all it's forms. Is it worth it to play through all four games, or just avoid it?

I tried out the game for a little; the interface and getting around in general is godawful.

.Hack seems alright at the start, but you actually find out the game sucks ass during the first 1/3 of part 2.

Terrible, and a total lack of caring on Bandai's part didn't help. Thought it would be like a Bethesda game. Nope. MMO clone with more retarded 'players' and without the ability to slay them in an instant. Also for something that's supposed to 'emulate' an MMO, people sure do repeat themselves a helluva lot.
i will translate >>5s statement for yall, it goes like this

setting your expectations for .hack at the level of bethesda's games was your mistake

Well I wasn't familiar with Bandai.
STOP GASPING IN HORROR, NO SERIOUSLY.
I had no idea the only things they were known for previously were Giant Robots, Giant Monsters, and Giant Robots Fight Giant Monsters.

What the fuck? Bethesda? You bought .hack and expected similarity to fucking elder scrolls? I don't fucking believe you

Is the story worth going through four games?

Not really. Better off watching the TV series. (Either one, your choice.) I played through the first and didn't see much correlation. The combat is really boring too. It's too MUCH like an MMO. Run up. Hit attack, hit attack, hit attack, heal, hit attack, level up. Repeat on next monster. I like the OAV's story, or would, judging from the first....but damned if I'm going to have that second useless disc laying around.

I agree with >>15, it's very repetitive. Gain access to new area, teleport there, make it to the lowest chamber, get some character event, get a new item, teleport back out, repeat.
I hate to say it but the series wasn't that great either, it was realy all done before, and the second show I avoided like the pague because it was FRICKEN CHIBI! Although I agree with you about the game, too repetitive, the first game was fine but the second game was like "WTF I have to do this crap all over again, WHY?!" I was under the mistaken idea that it would be like... a second part, like with a compleatly different playing feild, not that you would have to go through the same areas and then, oh wow after a huge while you unlock another place... with levels JUST LIKE THE ONES YOU WERE IN BEFORE! the game was awfull

I don't know who the fucking morons are that bought more than the first game, but thanks to you, even more of these are getting hammered out. Jesus, where does it end?!
Excuse me for enjoying the concept of a game within a game. It's us that have faith in the series that get burned by BanDai's greed. You've already written it off, so you're safe. You're not going to be a hundred dollars poorer because of .hack//MATURE.
The concept is solid, and I can appreciate that. But the cheap toss-it-together follow-through is both sloppy and an insult to gamers. The 4 first .Hack games could have easily all fit on one disc, you know...you're just getting milked.

You took the words right out of my mouth. I still can't believe they spun this series off into an oav series, two tv series, a manga and a novel. They wouldn't be marketing this shit if people* didn't buy it.
*By "people" I mean your generic, slobbering "I'll gladly spend money on anything from Japan" animu fan.

yeah, bandai was really shameless about making this as a milk-fans game; they were just experimenting to see if they could do the same thing to videogame otaku as they can do to anime otaku.

I would only play the games if you watched .hack//Sign and enjoyed it. All of these comments are very valid, but you just have to hold out for a little bit. The last to games were by far the best story wise.
And there is a fairly relevant link to the .hack//Sign, but it's not really worth your time and money if you're not at least very interesting in the series. In all fairness obsession sugar codes the experience very well.

The games did come off as poorly done, and mostly a pain in the ass to get through, the leveling system did very little to increase stats to your character and mostly everything is let up to what equipment you have on at the time. The fighting system is mostly bland, even if it is real time.
I admit, I was one of those people who originally heard about the idea of a game being made that would emulate online RPGs and have you trying to fix the world of an MMORPG, and my mouth watered as if I had tasted of a fruit of such refined tastes that I would orgasm.
Unfourtunatly, the gameplay does not hold up to the concept, and fails miserably.
The story is done SOOOO much better within the actual anime series, so just pick up those if you want to have some "Fun" with the concept of .hack//

Actually, I have to admit that the one thing I did like about the games was the "new mail" notifier in the corner. It was kind of cool.

Actually, one thing really bothered me about .Hack
I've only played the first game, and I noticed that on your mailing screen, it sorta comes up like a browser, and where the web banner should be on the top of the page, there is a graphic you can see but it's in poor quality.
I studied it for a little bit and found out it was a graphic of the cat girls from "Tail Concerto", which if I remember correctly, Bandai had NO FUCKING COPYRIGHT for!
How the hell did they get away with this?

same developer (cyberconnect2); bandai published both games as well

Shadow Warrior used images from existing anime series, it's wierd they didn't get sued. Front Mission 3 has the best web browser simulation, btw.
