Is dot Hack actually good?

I've been avoiuding Dot Hack in all it's forms.  Is it worth it to play through all four games, or just avoid it?

The concept is solid, and I can appreciate that. But the cheap toss-it-together follow-through is both sloppy and an insult to gamers. The 4 first .Hack games could have easily all fit on one disc, you know...you're just getting milked.
