Processor

So, how does one go about choosing a processor? I've decided to build a computer to familiarize myself with hardware, and this is really the one thing I know nothing about. My mobo is AM2, and I'm thinking of getting a dual core. But beyond that, I'm lost. HALP?

AMD ATHLON 300000000000+

AMD suck arse at this point in time.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 (you can overclock the fuck outta these too) + 1Ghz FSB mobo + 1Ghz RAM

Now you're set.

It's never lupus

Well I am not an "mobo." You have no right to call me that if I made mistakes.  This site should have some rules about harrassments, threats, and name calling.  I am still in the need of more help in that regards

Your copypasta is fucking old dude... and lame.

What is your motherboard?  If it's worthless and you have some disposable cash, you might as well start over on Intel (or with a good AM2 mobo, which are actually much better values than LGA775 mobos right now).

If the mobo's worth keeping, any of the Brisbane X2s (65 W, 65 nm) will work great.  If you can wait until July 9, all AM2 X2s will drop in price by 20%.  Otherwise, best deal I've seen was a Brisbane X2-4400+ (2300 MHz) for $70 a few weeks ago.  Good sweet spot for price/performance.

Benchmarks don't lie, but you do.

Intel dude. Fuck the AMD off.

AMD will rise again.

Yeah, you're gonna start the fucking architecture jihad now aren't you, little soldier.  ALLULLULLULLULLULLUH!

When AMD was on top less than 2 whole years ago, I was cheering up the sullen Intel fanboys too.  Who knows, maybe one of my unbiased posts from back then kept YOU from crying over owning a Celeron D or some shit.  Don't fag out over such small things.

>>8
Of course.  Then Intel will rise again.  Then AMD will rise again - again.  And everybody will be fucking surprised every time, and kids will shoot each other in the face over it.

Whole reason I asked about what mobo you already own was to keep some fag from telling you to shove it up your ass just because it wasn't LGA775.  If it's worth keeping, I'll tell you so.

OP here. The mobo isn't what I'd have picked for a first or even second choice, but I'm on a bit of a budget and a friend recomended it to me (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138026)

One thing to note is that I'll won't really be using this for gaming. I'll be watching and editing video, photoshopping, and listening to music, mostly. I'm hoping to spend less than $100 on the CPU, but I can go up to $130 if that's the only way to avoid AIDS.

AM2: get a 3600+ Brsibane and overclock it.
Thread over.

Perfectly fine motherboard for non-gaming and overclocking.

Good advice in this case.

Shut up.  After AMD rises again, then Cyrix will take over.  Then some Chinese manufacturer which will make a clone chip without DRM restrictions will conquer everybody.

my processar, it has 9 gigga hurtz

yeah, get a chep old P4 with ddr ram (screw rambus) and some half shitty gfx card, for the tasks you will be preforming ram and processor GHz is what's needed.
I dont know of any video editing program that uses two or more cores and the argument "but what if i want to listen to music and encode video at the same time" is invalid since it will only slow the video encodeing process down by a minute at most.

newegg.com

Use that site.

Try to use a dual-core processor.

An Intel Duo Core 3.0GHz processor should be a little over 100 dollars, but really worth it.

The more L2 Cache you have, the better.

DDRSDRAM is really good.. try for 2 GB or more, especially for Vista.

Get 256MB+ of video card RAM for beter gaming.

Enjoy

P4 is inefficient.  RAM size is very important, but DDR is very expensive compared to faster DDR2.  And OP already has an AM2 motherboard that takes DDR2.  Plus dual core is more useful than that, and the Brisbane 3600+ is so cheap already, with big OC potential even on stock cooling.

Intel Duo Core 2 is the only CPU to surpass the AMD.

If you can't afford that, stick to the AMD.

Don't expect any spectacular results from either though for what you have in mind. For that I'd say go back to >>3

"An Intel Duo Core 3.0GHz" - you been drinkin' again?

Don't change these.
