Some people like Peerguardian:

Some people say it's made of AIDS and FAIL.

Personally, I don't give a shit about fuck

its just that my brother in-laws brother got an email from the isp we both have and it said he was downloading too much that paramount had copyright over. i dont particularly want to be sued by a big corporation or anything, its just that many countries fuck australia over with not releasing their movies here until about 6 months after it comes out in america.

its only for movies that wont come out for a long time but have already been released in america, i still go to see the movies/buy the dvd anyway so i dont see a problem in it.

4chan said utorrent is better because 4chan finds amusement in telling lies that make superficial sense.

And also in telling the truth.

Well, since we're talking about uTorrent somewhere in here, is it still safe to use it? I heard they sold out and I switched to ABC, althought I really want to go back to using uTorrent.

Older versions are the same as they used to be. Still safe. Newer version (ie over 1.6) might be bad, but they'd lose their entire client base that way...

utorrent does not install spyware.

yes it does.

lol ip ban. you do know people can get new ips?

Utorrent is still safe as at version 1.600
The reason for all the crap about it is that it's closed source and has now been sold as a commercial item.  However, to date no new version has yet been released.  If you're concerned, stick to version 1.6 when the newer version eventually comes out, or you could stop running around like a headless chicken and actually check if the new version does anything it shouldn't.

As far as blocking is concerned, Peerguardian 2 is very useful for P2P - it blocks dodgy (i.e. Sony, MPAA etc) IP addresses from connecting to you in a torrent, so there's no data exchange between you.  Just looking at my Peerguardian log for the last day, Sony and Media Works show up in my block list on a number of occasions.  It's not 100% foolproof as it's only good as long as the blocklist is updated, bu at the moment it's updated pretty frequently.

yeah it seems to be working well, i started to downloaded a foofighters album that i bought a while ago to test this and it picked up a BMG ip address and blocked it.

IP blocklisting is the most bullshit swiss-cheese security I've ever seen.  Only in the dumb-ass world of P2P could it even be called "security."

Sure, it's nice to be able to make sure that you aren't just letting people from certain IP ranges connect to you, but it's like everybody's hoping that everyone at the RIAA, MPAA, etc. can only connect to the internet from within some IP range that can be known by "trusted list updaters" at any given time.  Ooooh, however else would they get on the internet to obtain the info they need to sue your ass???  Because it's impossible to get internet through Yahoo DSL, AOL, or the damn library these days.

Also, Peerguardian et al does precisely dick for BT stuff, because when the **AA seizes the records of a torrent site they have your IP on record anyway.

Let's see: IP niggerlisting is not a method to make P2P secure against the mafiaa. However, it does report being filtering out some mafiaa connect attempts, so it spares you of some. Since thse things work on having seen you downloading too much stuff, and since what they often do is poisoning attacks of several kinds (and remember that, due to the way eMule works, the majority wins), blocking well-known mafiaa IPs does help.

Yeah, but the point is, it's so easy to bypass.

I'd be surprised if any org that tracks or poisons "illicit" downloads still tries to do either from their office subnets very much any more.  I can get as many IP addresses as I want from any number of companies that are just dying to give me one (ISPs, etc).  And I don't even have much money.

Don't get me wrong.  I use several lists myself for various applications.  But it's not going to help a determined org find out what I'm doing.  And in the past 3-4 years, I've maybe blocked less than 3 connect attempts from blocked IPs on a strict list (IIRC, they were just foreign universities).
