when i try to install a game it says I need to update my direct x .. ok so that seems simple enough... I do the update and try to install the game .. and it still says i need to update direct x

Try dxdiag, see if that gets you anything. "the update" - does that mean you went to microsoft.com and downloaded DX9.0c? Also, are you using a DX9 graphics card?
