Icon-free desktops?

Name: Anonymous 2005-12-08 17:42

I absolutely hate having any icons on my desktop. Is there a way to get rid of that damned nigh irremovable Recycle Bin icon or move it to, oh say, the Start Menu or Task Bar?

Feel free to flame me if I've missed some obvious way of doing so.

Easy. Right-click on the desktop -> Active Desktop - it's somewhere in there.

*Smacks self* Thanks a lot!

Actually, it was Right-click -> Arrange Icons By -> Show Desktop Icons.

Or use Lunix with some elite WM.

Or use windows with some elite shell, like Litestep.

OR USE VMS AS GOD INTENDED

Been running Geoshell since 4 years now, works fine. Looks like it's not really being developed anymore, quite a shame, IMHO.

All the alternate shells for windows are pretty much dead. Even litestep.

I've been hanging around the Sun/ SGI/ DEC/ HP/ Unix section of Ebay. There's a couple of Alphas up there, I think I'm gonna try to get one and stick VMS on it. Kinda pisses me off that it's called OpenVMS these days though. Like, wtf is open about it?

Seems Open has become another buzzword for the marketing types :).  Stuff being Open-Source is indeed great, but many businesses tends to abuse the meaning a tad :|

Having been a litestep user, I can see why it died.

OpenOpenSource!
My managers have this obession with open source where they think they can just yoink anything they want despite the number of times I tell them the licenses don't work that way.

>Seems Open has become another buzzword for the marketing types *again*

Fixed. OpenVMS's name originates from the "open" fad of the  early ninties when you had OpenStep, OpenWindows and the formation of the Open Group.

It went from VMS to OpenVMS in 91 ("Open Source" wasn't coined until 97 or 98).

Thanks, that clears it up.
Did "open" have any meaning at that time, or was it just like putting 'e' or 'i' on the front of everything?

>>16 I'm not sure; but my guess is that it was an eCrap/iCrap style marketing gimmick.

It's what most computer users called running a program or viewing a document. Nowadays it's "RIGHT CLICK WITH MOSUE TWICE TO MAKE IT COME UP."

We don't have high standards as far as education and vocabulary is concerned, it seems.

That was VIP quality.

It's a shame that Litestep is near-death. I love it, but if you want a nice skin now-adays, you'll have to adopt an already made on and modify it to hell and back.
