Icon-free desktops?

I absolutely hate having any icons on my desktop. Is there a way to get rid of that damned nigh irremovable Recycle Bin icon or move it to, oh say, the Start Menu or Task Bar?

Feel free to flame me if I've missed some obvious way of doing so.

Did "open" have any meaning at that time, or was it just like putting 'e' or 'i' on the front of everything?
