Thanks, yamakan.

Are there any examples of mixed timing in western animation?

By mixed timing, I mean when the timing changes during the same shot during the movement.

As example, I've seen a jump movement where the timing switches between 2s and 3s. Yutapon does it in a very extreme way.
Sometimes he animates all in 2s and suddenly there are two frames in 1s or 3s.
It creates a certain feeling of tension and weight.

It seems like that's a common thing for japanese karisuma animators.
But I was interested if they have been doing this outside japan back then.

Please no offensive or racist comments, I'm just curious if any disney animators used this technique.

>>298
You mean frame modulation?

Name: Anonymous 2013-12-01 8:13

>>299
yes, frame modulation on a single movement.

Name: Anonymous 2013-12-01 8:20

>>299
>>298
It used to bother me a lot that there are no animation articles written about frame modulation.
The only place where it's slightly mentioned is on Yasuo Otsuka's wikipedia.

But I think it has become more common these days in the west.
I've recently seen frame modulation in french animated shorts from Gobelins university.
I heard rumors that Otsuka visited Gobelins long time ago and teached them some of his techniques such as his frame-modulation stuff.

Name: Anonymous 2013-12-01 8:22

>>301
It's not a rumor, he really was at Gobelins. There is even a clip from it in his documentary.
It's probably because french people are generally more open to japanese content.

After watching a few Disney movies I've noticed that they sometimes switch it up for a single action.

Here's an example:

http://sakuga.yshi.org/post/show/1735/101_dalmatians-animated-artist_unknown-western

The dog is on twos before they join hands. From there it's all on ones. You can notice the slightly more choppy movement.

There's also this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7F9bJXnPY0

but it's all on ones in the final cut.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7F9bJXnPY0&t=1m36s
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6ogPvybOiA&t=13m1s

You'll probably find a lot more if you go through a Disney film.

Name: Anonymous 2013-12-01 9:13

>>303
That's interesting.
Although I think this one isn't really the frame modulation I meant since it's not happening during the same movement. The dogs movement before they join hands is an individual movement and so the part where they dance, they are separate.

The animator's survival kit examples are better, but I don't feel like these are frame modulation neither.
I will keep looking and see if there is some more obvious ones around.

I think Milt Kahl was a lot more advanced at disney when it comes to frame modulation. http://sakuga.yshi.org/data/98a91edb6c796a742245b108536ba10e.gif

Although I'm really looking for western animators that applied frame modulation as intense as animators like Mitsuo Iso did.

Good luck on that. You might find something in the indie category but definitely not disney.
The thing is that since western animation productions such as those from disney never had any budget issues, they never cared about using advanced timing techniques such as applying frame modulation.

If you are so interested in frame modulation you should check out Kouichi Arai's scene in Paranoia Agent ep.8, it's the part where they want to hang themselves.
It's one of the most intense frame modulations out there.
Mainly in 4s and 3s, but you don't even recognized that and it never feels jerky, it looks extremely fluid because it's so well done. Masterful timing.

PS: Kouichi Arai is an underrated "full limited" animator.

I don't fully agree with you. That's not Arai's usual style.
Utsunomiya was probably the reason for the intense frame modulation and full limited animation in Arai's scene.

Yeah that's as far as it goes for Disney from what I've seen. You won't really see a character swing a bat with a mix of twos and threes. I'll try checking some of the Looney Tunes/Merry Melodies shorts.

She might really be a lesbian.

wrong, Utsunomiya can't draw so well.

It's all Inoue's work. He fixed everything in Arai's scene including the timing.

I could even imagine that Inoue did uncredited key-animation work on episode 8.
Just look at it, the drawings scream for Inoue.

Name: Anonymous 2013-12-01 10:39

Why is Inoue so perfect?

Name: Anonymous 2013-12-01 10:55

>>318
Read some of his interviews and you will understand.

Inoue has never been satisfied with his work, that's why he kept getting better.

Name: Anonymous 2013-12-01 11:03

It's not hard to understand.

When you combine great animation skills with great drawing skills, that's how you become an Inoue or Okiura.

And that's something rare in the animation world, most animators can only draw in a certain stylistic way, with very simplified anatomy and flat bodies.

Just imagine Adam Hughes was also a great animator, he would be on the same league as Inoue.
It's still a mystery to me how animators in Japan started to care about anatomy and realism. Was it because of their leading comic artists such as Otomo?
