NEW IMPROVED BOOKCLUB

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-01 4:43

Okay since BOOK CLUB pt.1 wasn't very popular [no offense Anon], how about this:

Everyone post TWO books they are interested in reading that are popular / considered classics or must reads.
After 20 posts, there is sure to be a reoccurring book.
Most popular book is chosen, three weeks will be given for Anonymous to find a copy, read it, and join the discussion in this thread.

Sound good?

My two picks would be

Atlas Shrugged
1984

Lets do this!

Of mice and men
Journey to the centre of the earth

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-01 7:57

In Search of Lost Time

Atlas Shrugged

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-01 7:59

If we end up reading Atlas Shrugged, I swear to God...

David Copperfield
The Brothers Karamazov

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-01 9:52

SICP
Dune

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-01 10:44

The Critique of Pure Reason
Being and Time

Fuck off with Ayn Rand. She's fucking shit. Read some Pynchon, I'd say Gravity's Rainbow but I think it's beyond the grasp of many anon here. Try maybe Crying of Lot 49. Other than that I'd suggest

Lolita - Nabokov  (relatively quick read but lots to discuss)
The Corrections - Franzen (be happy it's not your family)
The Trial - Kafka (epic mind fuck)
Blood Meridian/The Road - McCarthy (Blood Meridian is probably my favorite novel evar, definitely one of the best if not the best of the century)
Crime and Punishment - Dostoesvky

In Search of Lost Time
Pale Fire

Like this annon I want The Trial by Kafka and Blood Meridian by Mccarthy

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-01 17:39

Hah, and I actually got Beautiful Losers for Christmas to read for the previous one. Ah well, this is a good idea too, since we'll have more people directly involved.

My votes:
Nabokov - Lolita
Murakami - Norwegian Wood

A few notes of advice I have thought of if we are to pull this off.

1. Let's attempt to refrain from any generic school-reading books, such as most dystopia novels (1985, Brave New World, etc.). I have nothing against these great books, but I assume that we are all somewhat active readers here I assume, so we should look for something different than our high school curriculum.

2. No lengthy books. This is a new idea, and I'm sure most of us don't want to read Atlus Shrugged or War and Peace for a book club that may not even come to fruition. In general, our first book should up to 300 pages at the most.

3. The book club will need some organization once it sets off. I know we're just choosing books now, but if things come to work, we should have a relative date by which the book should be finished. Despite the date, the topic should be open for discussion by anyone who's read the book, whether they're in the club or not.

4. For some reason, this board does not have a name field, so we should be sure to identify ourselves through the e-mail field or at the beginning of each post.

If there are people who are actually interested in this, then tell your friends! This is probably the best board on all of 4chan, so more people would be nice. There isn't much to troll here, as most don't read enough books to even have trolling material.

Second

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-02 22:43

Nabokov - Lolita
Markus Zusak - The Book Thief

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-02 22:46

>>15
Oh by the way, on length. The Book Thief is 500 some-odd pages, but it is a phenomenal book and a quick read despite the page count.

Metamorphosis
Of mice and men

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-03 20:56

Mythago Wood - Robert Holdstock
The Count of Monte Cristo - Alexandre Dumas

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-04 19:19

Dune - Frank Herbert
Hyperion - Dan Simmons

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-04 19:44

Slaughterhouse 5

Atlas Shrugged (Don' flame me bro! I just want to know if it can possibly be as bad as everyone says it is)

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-04 20:26

This thread was a failure fromt he first post? seriously Atlas Shrugged? If you guys weren't trolling you wouldn't have mentioned that.

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-05 7:15

-Dune

-Atlas Shrugged

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-05 9:45

I managed to get 1/3 into Atlas Shrugged. Wouldn't say it's bad, but it certainly has its own style... And you may or may not sympathize with the author or her political propaganda.
But still, I'd like to finish it some day, so I'd go with that and Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon -- which is a far more awesome book I've been meaning to finish as well.

And if you count Atlas Shrugged as trolling then I'll go with Godel Escher Basch by Douglas Hofstadter. It's relevant to my interests in psychology, philosophy and AI. Also about halfway through (see a trend here?)

Oddly enough four of those books were required readings for my English Comp class. I wasn't too fond of Lolita.

And my votes are:

1.Ape and Essence

2.Dune

>I wasn't too fond of Lolita.

Huh, really? What didn't you like about it?

Some people feel uncomfortable reading about that kind of subject matter. You should be sensitive to their feelings

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-05 17:43

>>26

I wasn't trying to be insensitive, I'm genuinely curious.

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-05 18:37

Milan Kundera - The Unbearable Lightness of Being
Franz Kafka - The Trail
Jorge Lous Borges - "Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius" or/and "The Garden of Forking Paths" (short stories might not be a bad idea, I've read the second, as I was able to download it, and I can read it again)
Gustave Flaubert - Madame Bovary
Enheduana - various hymns/poems (might interest some for the historical value, it made an impression on me)

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-05 19:17

>>25

It was just too disturbing and off-putting for my tastes.

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-05 19:39

Catch 22
The Trial

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-05 19:43

4 for Dune
4 for The Trial

Ive read dune, its a quick page turner so will be a quick read. Should we go for both books?

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-05 22:42

No, just the Trial it is really short and we can test how well this works.

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-06 1:13

The Trail it is !
"One of Kafka's best-known works, it tells the story of a man arrested and prosecuted by a remote, inaccessible authority, with the nature of his crime never revealed either to him or the reader."

Sounds interesting.

Picking up The Trial tomorrow.
Dont let us down anon!.

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-06 6:42

So glad it's not Atlas Shrugged...

I planned to head to the library today or tomorrow, so I'll grab a copy of The Trial then.

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-06 12:10

Sweet,I already have the book.

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-06 16:04

Excellent, this should make for an interesting 2nd reading for me.

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-06 18:13

I read The Castle and found it tremendously boring, should I bother with The Trial?

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-06 19:33

>>38
The Trial starts pretty good, but is god-awful later on. Castle is the same, except it becomes bad much faster. It's fuckign Kafka, what else did you expect? He was a horrible writer.

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-07 10:01

>>39
You are very edgy, and so pragmatic in your tastes. I approve.

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-07 20:42

>>39
Ugh, Kafka, horrible writer? GTFO. Book get bad quick, is no good. If this is the general trend around here, maybe The Trial was too ambitious.

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-08 9:46

>>39
The trial was never really finished, if I recall it correctly.

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-08 11:32

>>43
Indeed. Someone else put it together too; it wasn't in the correct order.

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-14 20:06

Bump we need to redo this

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-14 21:08

I'm reading The Trial as we speak at /book/'s behest. I'm supposed to think that K. is both an egotistical dick and an author surrogate, right?

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-14 21:37

What was >>42 and why the fuck was it deleted. How mysterious

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-15 3:48

Picked it up today, will start reading soon.

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-15 9:49

So that's it The Trial? I will have to fetch it. If it was going to be Rand I was out but this sounds good.
