Hannibal Lecter

I just finished reading The Silence of the Lambs yesterday. I hadn't seen the movie. I found the book very interesting, which surprised me because I usually read sci fi. I'm now working my way through Hannibal.

What do people think of these books?

Hannibal is fantastic, although it tails off towards the end. Watch the film after you have read the book, they change quite a few things in it, like getting rid of Margot and having Barney play a much smaller part, which was a shame as they were really interesting characters. However overall I prefer the film's ending to the books.

The best thing about the books to me is how Harris' writing style passively coaxes you into visualising a scene as if you were a close observer, which really lets you empathise with the characters. And Hannibal is the best anti-hero I have ever come across, he is an evil nasty sadistic manipulative bastard but you'll always end up rooting for him, not only against Mason, whose crimes are arguably less serious than Lecter's and Lecter has physically destroyed him, but even against Pazzi.

Loads of difference with Hannibal. They had to cut so much of the good stuff out of the film to make it so it would appeal to the American mass market (ie they had to dumb it down a lot) and as a result with the film you know things are happening but

you don't get to find out why so much.
For example the Paul subplot in the movie you have an idea that Paul isn't very nice to Clarice and is maybe jealous of her then... oh look every ones having a meal together isn't that nice. In the book you get to find out exactly whats happening, see Paul's motivations, how that ties in with Mason and how come he made it to dinner.

Also as I said in >>2 they cut Margot who was one of the most interesting characters in the book.

I suppose it would be okay to watch if you've read the books already, though, right?

I didn't care for Margot because those body building women are unpleasant for me to even think about.

>>5 oh yes, it is actually a good film, having that little bit of extra knowledge from the books will enhance it somewhat though.

I didn't 'like' Margot as a person a great deal, body building lesbians don't tend to have much effect on me either, but as far as the character goes she was interesting, especially in the events in the climax of Mason's story and in Barney's story. Barney and Margot were never any more than peripheral characters but they are very important to the story as a whole. Also when you see the film you'll lament how the Mason's end is more like an afterthought compared to in the book (there was actually a motive for it in the book).

I recommend Hannibal Rising too (nobody beets the Riz) it's a good book and although not as suspenseful as the other 2 it does a good job as a prequel.

I still prefer Red Dragon to Lambs to be honest.
