JC Staff shows always have a lot of ADs; they want to keep the waifus on-model, I guess.

fractale is awesome production wise?

graphics , animation ?

It was a success or a flop?

Dude, Fractale saved anime, though it couldn't save itself.

Character animation > effects animation > mechanic animation

Discuss

Agreed.

effects animation > mechanic animation

Mecha animation requires good drawing skills but even a shitty artist like rapparu can do effect animation.

Name: Anonymous 2013-06-01 17:27

>>488
In what regard?

Name: Anonymous 2013-06-01 18:59

mechanic > effect > character

character animation is the basic, bare bones skill any animator needs. Almost all of them are capable to some extent of doing it.

Effect animation requires an understanding of physics of effect/smoke/fire/water etc.. so the skill barrier is slightly higher.

Mechanic animation requires much more mental capacity since you don't rely on the skills of character animation too much, yet you still need those basics from doing chara & effect work. Oh and mecha animation implies effect animation since both used to be so tightly linked (mecha sakkan also handled effect sakkan work). If you were a good mecha animator, then you were also a good effects animator.

Mecha animation is dying out because it is hard to learn for the youngsters today, but simple flashy character animation is easier to pick up and go with.

Vehicle> Mechanic>effect>character

if vehicle can be non associated with mechanics

vehicles 2d animation is already dead (even in japan)

What do you think of this kind of guy ?
Sakuga is becoming mainstream shit ?

Vehicle = mecha at least when it comes to japanese animation.
No distinction is made.
Takeshi Koike calls all the car animation in Redline "mecha animation" because mecha means mechanical, not just giant robots.

Name: Anonymous 2013-06-01 20:09

Fair enough.
A part of mecha is dead then

Maybe it's because turning a car in 2d is just a shitload of problem ,like animating The beautiful belldandy
Too much details and too hard risk of goin off the road and drawing something false

But why?

>Vehicle = mecha at least when it comes to japanese animation.

I guess the same person is in charge of them, but animating a robot is still different from drawing vehicles like traditional military hardware or space ships. It also depends if the mecha/vehicle animation is realistic or stylized.

We won't see anything like Stink Bomb again since rigid and geometric forms are much easier to work with in 3D.

RIP actually means "rest in peace". No clue to add "in peace".

Seems like real Sakuga guys are also dying.  RIP.

I think it's because young animator today have little to no interest in how machine works. Yasuo Otsuka spent his childhood drawing trains and cars and Anno also really fond of airplane in his youth.

Name: Anonymous 2013-06-02 10:45

>>509
Even Miyazaki who is more known for character work, his passion for planes drove him to make Porco Rosso.

Name: Anonymous 2013-06-02 11:07

>>497
Youngsters today just want to animate flashy scenes.
Flashy mecha animation takes too much time and effort.

And young animatorsnaren't fan of Mecha's (trains, planes, cars etc) nowadays? I don't think that's it.

Name: Anonymous 2013-06-02 21:47

Young people these days in general aren't as fascinated by mechanical stuff.

Name: Anonymous 2013-06-02 22:15

Mecha animation is also a dead end, lol. Not like 2D animation isn't...

Name: Anonymous 2013-06-02 23:37

>>492
Bullshit.

There is no emotional aspect involved in mecha, you don't have to think about how to move a robot or vehicle based on anything but physics.
Character animation is much, much more rewarding artistically, and good character animation is by far more exciting to watch than good mecha animation. You're only thinking about action scenes, forgetting the unlimited range of possibilities for the artform.

Come at me fuckers.

Starting on ep. 9, Attack on Titan added on another series action director to help out: Yuuko Sera. She's worked on ep. 6 and 9.

When you think about how to animate a character, there's a lot of stuff to take into account (at least, if you want to be top-game). Not only the context of the story, but the character's personality, the style of acting you're aiming for (literal/theatrical), how the animation style suits that, and more out-there would be cultural influences on both the animator and the character being animated (which the animator should ideally take into account). And well, animating emotions is simply much harder because it requires a higher degree of empathy and understanding than action.

If you want to talk physics only, it would depend on the artstyle. Animating a really detailed design would be infinitely harder than mecha animation simply due to all the bones and muscles moving when someone talks, not only in the face but in the whole body.
Not that anyone in animation would want such a realistic approach to the drawings, but still, generalizing "mecha animation" and "character animation" implies taking into account every style in which those two could be employed.
