mechanic > effect > character

character animation is the basic, bare bones skill any animator needs. Almost all of them are capable to some extent of doing it.

Effect animation requires an understanding of physics of effect/smoke/fire/water etc.. so the skill barrier is slightly higher.

Mechanic animation requires much more mental capacity since you don't rely on the skills of character animation too much, yet you still need those basics from doing chara & effect work. Oh and mecha animation implies effect animation since both used to be so tightly linked (mecha sakkan also handled effect sakkan work). If you were a good mecha animator, then you were also a good effects animator.


Mecha animation is dying out because it is hard to learn for the youngsters today, but simple flashy character animation is easier to pick up and go with.
