yu yu is fun to watch but not the kind of anime that makes you feel fascinated. Try Rozen Maiden, if you don't like it you probably not into anime.
other suggestions:
Glass Mask (2005 latest remake)
Cowboy Bebop
K-on (don't listen to haters, K-on is actually good)
Cardcaptor Sakura

You can never suggest an anime, and then say "if you don't like you're probably not into anime."
It just doesn't work, since anime has countless genres and styles, you have to try all of it before you swear off anime.

This. I dropped Rozen Maiden, thought it was plain boring.

Start off with Jungle wa Itsumo Hale nochi Guu(1st season), imo. You'll get the feel of how anime is, by watching that.
Lucky star, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and Naruto all are pretty good animes.

Any movie by director Hayao Miyazaki. Academy Award winning Spirited Away is probably a safe bet.

Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann
Darker Than Black
Detroit Metal City (o shit this is fuckin hilarious)
Dennou Coil
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (you probly wont understand shit)
Anime is just a medium, you can't call it 'bad' or 'good'.
You don't say something like "I don't like music".
There are some good anime, and a lot of shit things as well.
It kind of depends on what you're looking for. Some of the quality anime I like are 'Spice and Wolf' and 'Clannad'.
THE FACT THAT JAPANESE ANIMATION IS SO EASILY IDENTIFIABLE SHOWS HOW SEVERELY LIMITED AND GENERIC IT IS.

The fact that American cartoons are so easily identifiable shows how much Westerners suck at caricaturizing themselves. A lot of Japanese people do have bigger, rounder eyes on average than most other Asian people, and the majority of anime is a shit-load more realistic than stupid, screaming, violent American media in general. I suggest you watch Kerberos or GTO instead of Digimon and other fantastical kid shit before trying to juxtapose "all" anime against anything American that you consider "avant-garde."

They've made it to holding hands, but they're still so polite to each other
I wonder if they'll be polite during sex, too?
Train: "I'm going to put it in, if you don't mind?"
Herm: "No, not at all."
Train: "Are you enjoying yourself?"
Herm: "Yes, very much. Ahaha *laughs*"
Train: "I think I'm going to come."
Herm: "Yes, please do."
It's like how royalty has sex.

───At a lookout point, overlooking the night scenery
Hermes: "It's... such a lovely view..."
Train Man: "This is one of my favorite spots."
Hermes: "Oh, really...? Thank you for sharing it with me."
Trane Man: "Of course. I shared it BECAUSE it's you. *laughs*"
Hermes: "Ahaha *laughs* I'm happy to hear that *laughs*"
──After a short silence, their hands accidentally brush up against each other
Plane Man: "Ah, forgive me..." (hurriedly pulls his hand away)
Hermes: (whispers) "...I wish you hadn't pulled away..."
Plain Man: "Eh...?"
Drain Man: "Um... Hermes?"
Hermes: "Y... yes?"
(their hearts both pound)
Crane Man: "The truth is... from the first time we met... I've..."
Hermes: "Wait, please. Let me say something first..."
Rain Man: "Okay."
(Hermes moves slightly closer to Train Man)
Hermes: "Since that time when you saved me on the train... I've been in love with you...
I'm older than you, but... please go out with me, and try not to leave me behind..."
(Train embraces Hermes gently)
Brain Man: "If you'll have me... I mean, yes. Please, go out with me."
Hermes: "Heehee... I'm so glad. Thank you."
The two kiss.
From behind, only the sparkling night scenery watched over them.
It seemed to be giving its blessing to the couple...

Truthfully, if you don't know much about anime I'd suggest watching Elfen Lied.
It's a good gateway show because it's something you won't see in other mediums. And yes, I know people will bash it for whatever reason but a lot of fans got into anime by watching Elfen Lied.
Great job, keep it up. I love to return to this site and read the contents

I got into anime watching FLCL. If you've never really watched anime before, FLCL has pretty decent voice acting in the English-dubbed version (relatively speaking; most dubbed anime have shit voice acting) and it's got just enough of Japanese-ness that when you move onto something else you won't have such a bad culture shock. Also, it's only 6 episodes, so you can watch the whole thing in one sitting if you really want to.
I found this is an informative and interesting post so i think so it is very useful and knowledgeable. I would like to thank you for the efforts you have made in writing this article. I am hoping the same best work from you in the future as well. In fact your creative writing ability has inspired me. Really the article is spreading its wings rapidly…Lening berekenen

Soul Eater, One Piece (personal favorite) or Gurren Lagann =]. In my opinion, the best of shounen animes I have seen yet. I emphasize on the YET..still a considerable lot I still havent seen. and others: Hellsing, Cowboy bebop, Samurai Champloo and Afro Samurai (just for sheer awesomesauce action)
