Correct order of Ghost on the Shell stuff

Name: Anonymous 2006-02-03 6:03

I've recently acquired all Ghost in the Shell anime that exists. What is the correct order to watch it?

My guess:

First movie
1st gig series
2nd gig series
Second movie (Innocence)

Also, where does the Tachikoma special stuff fit in? Did they show one of those after each episode of 1st gig? (or 2nd?)

1 tachikoma special after each gig episode (where the next episode preview would normally be). the movies have no plot connection to the series so you can watch them whenever. second movie kinda sucks, just eye candy. you should watch them in the order you guessed and don't forget to read the manga if you haven't already.

p.s togusa ftw

Innocence is the sequel to the first GitS movie.

1st and 2nd GIG have nothing in common with the movies (story wise)

1st and 2nd GIG happen before both movies because the major is in her first body

For what it's worth, the last scene in the last episode of 2nd gig is pretty much the same as the beginning of the first manga series, which is what the first movie is based on.  (The sakura viewing scene.)

So it's....

1st gig
2nd gig
manga
first movie
second movie

...?

More like:

1st GIG
2nd GIG
first manga series/first movie
second movie
second manga series

The first movie is loosely based on the first manga series and they basically end on the same note so I think it's truer to treat them as alternate tellings of the same events in the timeline.

The second movie however doesn't follow the second manga.  Personally, I view the second movie and second manga series as alternate universes after the Motoko/cyberhacker event.

I'm with you about the movies and the manga.

However, I always thought that the first SAC kind of based on the first manga, but happened in an alternate universe where the puppeteer never existed and there was the laughing man instead. The plot has some similarities between the anime series and tha manga, there are even similar scenes, but the story on the whole is different. I haven't watched the 2nd gig yet so I don't know how that fits in but I'd wager it somehow continues in the same timeline that 1st gig started.

Ok, question/comment for ya then... I don't exactly remember the Tachikomas talking durring the first movie. What happens to them? A rollback on their drivers? lol

Wasn't there one in the last battle?

I don't remember them even being in the first movie.

I think >>9 has it right, though. The anime is an alternate universe without the puppet master.

My point exaclty, even tho the movie supposedly comes after SAC, there's almost no mention of them except for the tie-in game made for the PS1. If you've played it, thne you recall that they ride them as tanks but they never talk or express any emotions (as far as I recall).

I mean, you have to admit, a lot of people watch GitS for the Tachikomas. =D

I'm guessing because of what happens at the end of the 2nd gig.

No no no! The Stand Alone Complex series, the movies, AND the manga are all COMPLETELY separate from each other. They're all alternative interpretations of the original manga. Except for their individual order (1st gig before 2nd gig, 1st movie before Innocence, etc.) you are NOT required to watch them in any order!

If anything, read the volume 1 of the manga first, for context. Then watch both movies. Notice the similarties, then watch Stand Alone Complex and giggle when you recognize the parallels and references. Then read the last volume of the manga, because it's the least truly connected with the original, and is kind of a mindfuck, so you'll need a bit of time to digest.

Okay, let me get this right, the order of viewing is as follows:

manga volume 1
movie 1
movie 2
manga volume 2

1st gig and 2nd gig can be watched whenever since it's AU. Is that right?

I'd go with:
SAC 1
SAC 2
Movie 1
Movie 2

as listed above

why is Togusa a what do you call it like Batou in the 2nd movie

i dont think ive ever seen him cybernetic on the series

i mean doesnt he have a wife or something on the gig series but

Name: Anonymous 2006-05-28 20:32

The ending of 2nd GIG sucked

Name: Anonymous 2006-05-29 6:41

Apart from anything else, the first movie did really badly in Japan. So instead of trying to make another one, they went back to the drawing board and made Stand Alone Complex as an entirely separate interpretation of the original manga.
