Does ADV have good translations, or just average translations? For some reason, fansubs I've watched prior to official releases seem to have more life, more character, or better jokes than the licensed DVD release. Is ADV translating just to get it done, without putting emphasis on certain things?

It depends. Excel Saga had a very good translation, but not Aura Battler Dunbine.

I think it more sense from a business POV that if Series A is only projected to sell very little, they would put less effort in the translation.

With official anime translations you really don't know what you're going to get. The best thing to do is look up opinions on each individual release.

Varies from title to title. Overall, ADV is now a lot better than they were when they started.

totally; i know people on this board say it a lot but a couple years ago the fans REALLY would have had something to whine about
Baka = Fool????? WTH??? I thought idiot was more appropiate and more fitting. Totally ruined Ruri's moments/

ADV translations are usually pretty crap compared to the rest of the industry. Corporate policy is Deadline > All, and the fact that they force translators to move to Texas and work on salary (vs. standard freelancing rates) doesn't do much for employee morale.

Bleh. ADV is hiring again...after they fired some 40-50 people over the last year.

Dummy is also good. And it has the same number of syllables as baka.

I feel the same way...I don't like ADV, I think they do a half-ass job most of the time with their translations. And don't even get me started on their dubtitle of Moldiver. Although I feel bad for the peepz who lost their jobs, it's good to see ADV doing badly. Let Geneon and the others who do a decent job get the licenses instead.

i'm no huge fan of ADV, but there's some irony in this post:
