Holy Jesus. What a pile of pants. The film is a pile of pants.
The best moment was when Tifa kicked some bloke's ass and the battle victory music played, she looked around bemused, and it turns out it is the bloke's mobile ringtone. That scene sums up the film: an attempt to entertain people who have played the game, but not even a semblance of a decent plot, characterization, or anything that will stir up any form of emotion except for a girly high-pitched giggle.
The action was impressive at first, but fight scenes are not enough to hold my attention for 2 hours. As far as I am concerned, it difficult to think of ways they could have made the film any worse.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on the fight scenes. They were hardcore, all of them.
And yes, i was watching the movie with friends, and when that victory music tune came up Everyone burst out laughing.
And as for plot, characterization ... what are you smoking?
--1) Characterization was done in the GAME.
--2) Plot was: The failed Sephiroth Experiments were trying to resurrect Sephiroth and Jenova.

it really was a terrible movie, and I think FF7 was an okay videogame. the fight choreography was actually pretty nice; biting off wuxia movies is kind of a weird choice for FF but it looks good. the direction on the other hand, was a quick-cut abomination. fuck, you could barely see what was going on half the time. everything else though, was really just trotting out elements from ff7 and saying hey check it out it's (thing). the plot was negligible. nothing important happened to anybody. and in between you have to deal with cloud being annoying and angsty (as usual with this movie, to please his fans) and then CHANGING FOR NO PARTICULAR REASON which i guess is pretty much what happens to rpg heroes anyway. it was criminal how underused the secondary cast was.

The plot was lame (or should i say not there at all?) but the action was good. Angsty cloud was annoying, and i really wanted more of the rest of the cast.
One scene i especially disliked was after cloud beats kadaj, then kadaj runs over to like attack him but stumbles, then cloud holds him like he's a dying lover. WTF?!

The movie was awesome when it comes to the action, but just as with Spirit Within it was just... I dunno... lacking. A lot of things were left unexplained (for example, what the hell happened with Tseng and Elena prior to their timely rescue of Rufus) and I really disliked how they turned the Turks, who were farking awesome in the game, into comedy squad. I mean, Rude lost a lot of respect in my book.
Then again, as I said, the action more or less made it up for that. Sephiroth was just... Graaaaah! *Sashiburi da na, Kuroudo*.
Some questions though...
1. What's with all the cars? Didn't they stop producing Mako?
2. How come the city is abandoned when Red XII and his grandpups or whatever visit it? Sure, the city received some damage, but it was hardly destroyed, the Shinra building and the area around it was more or less deserted.
3. How did Elena and Tseng survive? I kinda got the impression they were... uhh... killed by the brothers. :s
Vincent said to Cloud that he found them (elena and tseng) on the edge of death, and made sure they'd survive.
And i kinda like how they made the turks more comical. I just miss their obsession with snapping lol.

Advent Children was only meant to be 30 minutes long, in the first place. For being the sequel to a manyMANY hour'd video game, the story is pretty damn brilliant.
Midgar is "abandoned" because that shot takes place almost 500 years after the deafeat of Sephiroth.
Umm...in the movie it said that it took place 2 years after they defeated sephiroth, not 500. If it was 500 years later, all our main characters would've died.
Read his post again. He's talking about the opening shot of old Red XIII and the pups.

>>the story is pretty damn brilliant.
It was lame. Example: they wanted Sephiroth in the film, so they resurrect him - when he was blatently killed for all eternity in the game - with some lame method which really made no sense whatsoever. Result: we got to see Sephiroth have a huge fight with Cloud, but the story was just stupid.

It wasn't a "great" movie by any means, but still pretty entertaining, if only because it is so bizarre. Such effort to make something that is so niche. The whole thing is obviously just fan service, so you can't take it seriously... which is fine. Fun enough to be worth a watch.
Although I did feel a little ill sometimes watching it (literally)... just because you CAN move the camera all over the place (being cg) doesn't mean you should ><.

what's wrong with you fucks?
the fight scenes are fucking BRILLIANT, greatest action i've seen since... Cowboy Bebop Episode 26. Seriously.
The story did seem rushed but the CG was awesome, the fight scenes were awesome, and tifa was really cute. I'm usually not one to go for action either, and i really don't even life FF7 that much, but AC was pretty amazing. Now that the CG department is done with that, hopefully we can get a move on with ff12.

Yes, people are spoiled. Who do they think they are to expect a movie to have any value beyond eye-candy? They are taking time out of their lives to watch the thing and they want it to be worthwhile? Grow up, you selfish brats! You think movies are around to tell compelling stories with believable characters?!
Anyway, if you haven't seen the movie, here's a summary: Cloud fights Sephiroth. The End. Oh, and I think Cait Sith was around somewhere.

>Yes, people are spoiled.
The point is not of being spoiled, but of what criteria you feel a film should have to make it worth watching. Advent children didn't come close and I feel like my time was wasted. If it did make your criteria, great, but that doesn't make me wrong because I disagree with you, it just makes me different.

very nicely put. I agree that the movie was not very good, because it's "story" was just somewhat stolen from the game... if you know what I mean. But, I am never opposed to eye candy. It looked very nice. Just like Hero.

If you go into it expecting a good movie, then Advent Children will be a disappointment.
If you go into it expecting a feature-length cutscene with Nobuo Uematsu music and lots of dudes getting kicked in a variety of ways, then you'll have a great time.
Me, I thought it was ace.

I found AC to be a good movie. Not perfect but good. The story was a bit rushed, but if you truly understood the story from both the game and in this movie then you'll find it rather entertaining.
And for that opening scene. It's the ending scene from the game which is 500 years after they defeated Sephiroth. Then a text came up saying 498 years before that...which is 2 years after they first killed Sephiroth.
The actions were nicely choreographed(sp?), although the camera movment can get you a bit dizzy. And I'd have to say that they use Aeris's theme way too often.

I didn't really enjoy AC. I guess I'm just not into fan service as much as most FF7 fans. I felt the antagonists were poorly motivated and that the storyline was a bad excuse to have Cloud battle Sephiroth all over again.
Name:
Anonymous2005-12-01 15:13
No, if you properly understood the story off FF7 you'd realize the very existence of AC completely obliterates all quality it had. For example:
7: The climax is Holy finally destroys Jenova
AC: Surprsie we lied it's back
The action scenes were ridiculously bad. I mean, I don't know how anyone can enjoy two people flying around with absolutely no physics. The Tifa fight (And Reno) were the closest to acceptability, and even then making it more logical would have been better. For example, rather than jump straight back off the wall and flying at him, she should have ran down it and towards him. Makes more sense, would have looked less stupid than springing off a wall thirty feet.
Yada yada, no excuse for a story that contradicts the old one, stupid changes (Cloud's a stereotypical badass now, why?), just plain horrible. I cannot believe anyone would like this movie as a whole (Not that it didn't have quality. Music and CG was excellent).
Considering the entire thing was supposed to be fan service, why didn't they just animate scenes from the game? Even if it was choppy everyone would have known why and wouldn't have cared. Hell, AC is choppy shit with no story, might as well be scenes people are familliar with. There, you can fight Sephiroth and not have to revive him and make him evil over bloody-fuck nothing.
So, it's okay to summon giant beasts out of the sky, but god forbid someone jump higher than normal.
It's based off a video game in which the main character carries a sword that's almost as tall as him, I think physics really doesn't matter...

Notice how they put the game's physics behind summoning Bahamut? (Which was completely pointless, by the way) He was formed out of grayish lifestream, as I recall. A mostly unnoticed detail which goes a long way.
Besides, they're building on top of reality. They ADDED monsters, and made them fit pretty well. I mean, no one's going to care how he was formed into physicality because it's a monster and they don't exist.
However, when someone jumps, they don't change direction mid-air. That's not an addition, it's changing something that you can't change. People would have complained if everyone had a third arm for no reason.

Holy destroyed the Meteor. Jenova's gene materials are still all over the place.
Cloud was also a stereotype in the game, too.

The ending sequence quite clearly shows both Cloud and Sephiroth being purged by the lifestream and returning to perfect health. It completely eradicated Jenova from them, and as they so obviously mention, it goes out to remove all Jenova cells.
Cloud was a common "Anti-hero", but he was not a stereotype. In FF7 he is cocky and arrogant at the beginning. He is very lively and characterized in his actions (Such as his overblown shrugs, and don't just pass it off on the sprite because it matches his dialogue). He was a jerk and they obviously wanted the audience to think so, too, until he reforms later.
In AC he was the same as every single bishounen badass. Act tough, don't talk, brood (Because someone is ALWAYS watching).
If you think they're same character, consider this: Remember all the FF7 character art, cut scenes, sprites, etc. Would he have ever worn sunglasses? You know, the staple cool cliche? It never would have fit in that world or his character.
