Internet is changing...

I didn't know where to go to ask this question but, in general has anyone else noticed that the internet has started to behave differently with the rise of Reddit? Like the spread of Reddit cultural behavior?

did 4chan have a similar effect a few years back when it became pretty mainstream?

I've noticed that, too, but I blamed Digg users flocking to Reddit after their redesign.

What's been happening over the last 5 years is the same thing that happened to usenet back in the day. The top %10 of the internet that contains the vast majority of commercial websites and public services is where Reddit, Facebook, Twitter, and 4chan resides. 4chan had one of the most profound effects on western internet culture since AOL, and Reddit has taken that momentum now. pre-2006 4chan still exists, just not on 4chan.

The face of the internet will never be the same, but there's still more places to hide and take it easy in the "other" %90 of the internet that average people don't know exists. You just gotta go find it OP

Of course the internet is changing as it become more mainstream but Reddit doesn't really represent any turning point but more of a stepping stone. For some reason people who spend a lot of time on a single site tend to get tunnel vision in regards to the rest of the internet. It's silly to compare reddit with the chan concept as those concepts are very different and as such would appeal to different types of people. Reddit could never replace 4chan and visa versa. Personally I think 4chan as a popular site will stick around a lot longer than reddit as reddit appeal to the facebook concept of usernames, voting for popularity, advertising revenue etc (but then again. Facebook has lasted longer than I expected)

of course it's changing it's a new(ish) technology what else would you expect? And more and more "regular" (non-tech) people have access due to the improvement of UI's
