hey /prog/
i was thinking:
no matter how many times you repeat an event a person will always react to a situation in the exact same manner every time it happens, so long as each instance of the event has exactly the same variables as the repetition before it. In other words, if you put someone in a situation and observe how they react, then recreate that situation exactly, wiping clean all trace of it from the subject's mind, they will react in the exact same way.

in this way people are exactly like computer programs: you run the same function with the same arguments & you will get the same results every time.

∴ can we establish that people have no inherent free will, and just act according to their algorithm and stored variables?
or should i just lay off the psychotropics?

now time for the big question.....
what language are people programmed in?
my votes on VB6

Congratulations, you just discovered determinism. 2400 years after the rest of the world did. You're in for a shock when you move up to the 20th century and discover quantum mechanics.

I agree with OP, I think human is more like a comp, but more complicated, way more complicated, "Mood" is a variable contains different arrays of anger, hate, lust etc...
The types of an event affect the person's mood by a - or a + to a certain array,
Personality is how much you get affected by an event, different personalities will react differently to an even depending on their Mood and personality.
Our memory is a very high capacity one, records nearly everything and depending on how important that "thing" to a person's interests is how long it will take to fade away.

IMO, Human is a complicated biological computer, the injecting of a drug that affects our mood from "Sad" to "happy" for example show that our emotions and feelings are nothing but chemicals.

If someone is put into a situation that is still 100% the same as a previous situation, which in and of itself is impossible they would react differently because they had prior experience with a similar situation.

No, we're talking about an EXACT duplication. Meaning the memory of the experience that wasn't there during the initial run through would also be wiped.

Consider that this applies not only to you and me, or people in general, but to everything. Everything consists of molecules, which in turn consist of atoms, which consist of quanta, which consist of quarks, or however far down you want to go. Ultimately, everything consists of particles.

And these particles interact with each other based on rules. When we know and understand the rules, we call it physics or science. Whenever we haven't understood them we've called it a number of different things... religious people might call it the will of god or destiny. More "modern" minded people might call it "random" or "chance".

None of those really exist. They're just concepts we made up to explain that which we cannot explain. The reality of it is that everything that happens is just part of the same big chain reaction. And the outcome of any part of said chain reaction is predetermined. Not by fate, or some kind of reason, or purpose, or random chance but simply because that's the only way it can or could have happened due to everything interacting based on specific rules... whether we understand them or not.

If some hypothetical being existed outside of our universe and had a magic remote control that could rewind not necessarily time itself, but just the state of the universe to what it was, say, 100 years ago... then everything would just happen again exactly as it already has. Because that's the only way it could have happened given the starting conditions.

Once you realize this is true for the past and present, you also have to realize the same goes for the future. And that it's not about us not having free will, but that everything that happens can and will happen only the way it does and no other way.

Enjoy your bricks.
