Win Server 2003 email

Windows Server 2003 as an email server.

WTF is this shit. I don't want to create windows accounts for all email users.

The POP service allows one to create a password text file store in the users mail box for authenticaltion. Great.

The Virtual SMTP service does not allow the use of this file for authentication. So the only way to send mail is to leave it as an open relay, which I will not do.

Is there a setup that accomdates the requirement of no user accounts/active directory for each email user using the built in POP/SMTP services.

Or is there a good alternate solution that is not Exchange?

This server needs to be a workhorse for a while so I need it to do everything. That includes being a database server. Linux does not offer anything close to SQL Server. And I don't need some shit going over the Linux DB options. I know then, and if you think any can compete with SQL Server, then you don't know shit anyways.

But the topic isn't databases, its email servers on Windows, not fucking Linux or FreeBSD or some other fucking stupid response.

try XAMPP. i checked it out briefly after i setup my own http+php+mysql 30MB package(really, i just mashed the 3 together in a folder labled "server", it worked ok for myself).

Do you not understand the concept of open source? Bugs get found more quickly, and when they're found there's a much higher chance of them getting reported.

There's a good reason the vast majority of servers out there is running Linux, and price isn't it.

That does not constitute a vast majority and actually demonstrates that Windows is growing faster than Linux as a server.

Bugs get found more quickly? You don't report a bug to security vulnerability site. You fix it or report it to the devs. That list constitutes exploits on Linux vs. Windows.

By both measures (market share and security) Linux has lost the round to Windows, again.

I highly advise you take a look at iRedOS, it is a pretty good mail server. Though it is built to run on top of CentOS.

Also as a side note, I find that linux is a lot better for server, I don't like it as much for desktops.  So if we are arguing servers then my vote goes to linux.  Takes a little bit more work to get it to work just how you want it, but it pays off in stability later... my linux server has had 78 days of up time currently... well I have never seen my windows server get over 30 days of up time...
