Dear god, take a look at the accessories market for the iPod sometime. Nearly every single $30 extra "feature" is standard equipment on just about all of the other mp3 player on the market.

Also, their computers are complete rip-offs. They are overpriced PCs with that retarded security chip so OS X can only be run on their official hardware. Too bad OSx86 has ruined that.

You say that like OSx86 is actually usable by the population at large.
Sounds like you are comparing a 399 PC to an 1500 iMac.. try comparing machines with the same specs and you notice the Mac's ain't so overpriced after all. (built-yourself component-by-component pc are cheaper, but that ain't really a fair comparison, since macs do come fully assembled and fitted with software...)
And WinXP can't burn DVDs or play DVD movies out-of-the-box. how's that for a laugh. go ms go.

Macs are overpriced even when compared to Dells with the same components.

If you don't want/need to use Mac OS X, sure. There are plenty of reasons that Macs are worth deploying in lieu of PCs, and vice-versa. Anyone who doubts this is either naive or trolling.
In other news, you can buy knives and dildos that cost the same, but you wouldn't want to consider their functions interchangeable for the sake of comparing value.
Back on topic, I think the iPhone will serve its target audience extremely well. If you aren't the in target audience (I sure am not), why bother caring?

Because it's galling to see so many people willing to throw their money away over something that's not nearly what it's hyped to be?

That's not a good enough reason. "Because it's fun to whine" iss more valid than that.

and i suppose you hold the same reaction to someone who purchase even a slightly luxurious car? after all, a 1980 yugo will get you from point A to point B in a similar fashion to a Jaguar. oh, those over-hyped luxury cars...
if its not your money being spent, and you have no intention of buying one, why bother whining about it? there are better things to complain about, like a failing education system, people starving in the streets, human suffering... pick any one.

That's a horrible analogy, because you are implying that you get something extra out of paying more for an Apple, when in reality you get less.

then please, inform me of a more (i know this is probably the improper word but oh well) luxurious smartphone, with all the same bells and whistles and a full featured operating system, and i will back down, recant my previous statement, and apologize.

If that Jaguar happens to have less functionality and is in reality a shitty car with a nice body when compared to the 1980 Yugo,
Yes. I'd have the same reaction.
As >>23 said, that's a fucking horrible analogy. For your analogy to hold any merit, the iPhone would have to actually back up its price with features and quality.
Which it doesn't do.
