I currently own an old DVD player and am looking to buy a new DVD player that can play most non-DVD video formats(.avi,.mpg, plus some of the newer encoded stuff if possible) without a hassle.
Are there any DVD players out right now that can do that? I do own a Toshiba DVD player that SUPPOSEDLY plays .wmv files but as of yet, I've yet to get it to play any said files.

Don't bother. I've seen a number of these players that supposedly handle miscellaneous video formats, and the results leave a lot to be desired. Unsynchronised sound, poor compatibility, bad error correction, dodgy overscan cropping, fussiness about resolution and encoding. You end up wasting time and discs trying to re-encode your video into a format the player can digest. Just get a decent bit of software to turn downloaded videos into standard DVD format. With a good encoder running in multi-pass variable bitrate you can comfortably squeeze three or more hours onto a single layer DVD with little perceptible loss of quality, and it'll play on practically any DVD player. The only downside of doing this is the time it takes to encode MPEG-2.
