After a little bit of thinking, I think I've slightly changed my stance.
it is definitely much better looking than other similar players. If someone wants something to play and hold tons of music, then you will be getting something bigger but for now this is a pretty decent smaller MP3 player. It is perfect for just tossing a few albums onto and listening through them. A portable 1GB drive isn't too bad either.
I'm still not too into it, but the lack of a screen might be explained by the fact that it has a smaller capacity. It is being marketed as something that you listen to randomly instead of seeking out specific albums and only listening to those. Of course you don't have to have it play randomly (which people are seeming to believe).

You guys forgot that there are some people who just want an mp3 player that will play music. A lot of them don't want to take the time to figure out the 'extra' stuff that mp3 players can do. Adding those things to mp3 players costs money anyway and whats the point of having them if you're not going to use them. One problem I think will be is that you'll get yellow-ed case after a few months use because of all the handling with dirty fingers.
I think Apple will sell a lot of these to those kinds of people.
I'm not one of them though.

The iPod brand is a big thing. And now there's this affordable little iPod that most people can buy and have a piece of the brand pie. It's basically as simple as a CD player. Play, stop, ff, rw, volume. It's a nice little iPod parents can give to their kids without worrying about it getting broken. And if it does, so what.. it's relatively cheap. The whole autofill thing is neat. Plug the sucker in and iTunes will automatically fill it up with random songs from your library or specific playlists you choose. The best way to think about the Shuffle is.. that it's like a personal radio station that only plays music you like to hear.

I don't use the microphone or the radio on mine, that's true. But the display is always a useful thing to have. Hell, even the cheapest CD player has a digit or two for the track number.

I bought the Diamond RIO, first MP3 player evar. It had a digit display. It's useless, nobody ever uses it. You fill it, go jog or bike, return, and the only buttons you've pressed is start/stop twice.

A friend of mine bought the iPod Shuffle not because he needed an MP3 player, but because the memory comes cheaper than in USB keys or other flash memory devices. Oh, and as an aside, it plays music. I'd say for the price, it's a good deal.

iPod shuffle is just Apple's attempt to make money from the poor side of society.
I'll agree that the lack of screen is bullocks, but I -do- usually keep my iPod on random shuffle anyway. Too expensive? Sure. Sleek? Not really. Suggestion? Save up and get an iPod or equally nice, full mp3 player.
the iPod shuffle as a USB storage is what is worth for really. The Mp3 capabilitiees is merely secondary function. Once you put it in that perspective the shuffle sounds worth for the price.

God I hate iPods. Why bother then there are lots of better, cheaper players on the market? When the batteries die quick and the music formats are limited, it's not worth it, no matter how much HD space it has.
Try OpenMG and a Minidisc player. Replace iTunes with BeatJam, or Winamp5. iPods and most Apple products in general are for people with A) Money to burn and B) No imagination. Use your mind and get more for less. More control, more quality, more freedom, and more cash left in your wallet. No contest.
