I'll get to the point. I am an 18 year old who wants to start martial arts. A bit late in the day perhaps, but whatever. I would like an art that is built around grappling, I was thinking of traditional Jiu Jitsu. What does anonymous think?
Ninja's were just plain old spies, nothing special about them.
I have no idea why I was asking here anyway, none of you fat fucks do martial arts. What was I thinking?

To OP: Why do you want to learn Martial Arts? Is it solely for self defense, or as a hobby and sport?
I ask this because if your looking for both, I would say that Judo is your best bet. Its fun, it encourages active sparing, and could potentially save your neck. The same can be said about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu if you don't mind rolling around on the ground with dudes in a blatantly homosexual manner. Learn Aikido if your only interested in wearing silly pants and being a fucking worthless weeboo.
If you just want to learn how to defend yourself, learn either boxing and/or Muy Thai. Also go online and learn every dirty trick you can think of i.e. Eye gouging, knee to the junk etc. Best method of self defense is running away like a sissy.

You must learn the ancient technique of propelling noxious gases out of one's ass at will. Only then will your training be complete.
i've done Chen style Taiji for about 6 years. i would suggest that first to develop the more logical skills/advanced skills first. the firm yet soft muscular conditioning creates very susceptable skills in future grappling.
i would suggest it. besides, standing grappling is far more common than ground work, which is rare in true fighting.
if i ever did grappling i'd rather do kosen judo (that was where brazilian jujustu came from, btw), or maybe something that's ALMOST grappling like Dog style Gongfu. if you want, you could talk to me on aim. just email me.

OP here, thanks for the few serious posts. I want to learn Martial Arts mainly as a sport/hobby. Anyway, I found a place for Jiu Jitsu and it looks pretty legit. One of the guys there who does BJJ got his black belt from one of the Gracies.

Well, most street fights go to the ground fairly quickly. Easier to do joint locks on the floory anyway, right?

I've actually met someone who specialized in making bricks and wooden boards made for martial arts events. They're structurally designed to break easily. In addition to having weak points the bricks are formed with a particularly high content of sand and the wooden boards are baked in an oven to become more brittle.

"Traditional jiu jitsu"? Is there such a thing, outside some super-secret Japanese secret society (of which one does not become a member)? I wouldn't expect to find any such thing in the US; look at what the typical "ninjutsu" school is for instance.

Unsurprisingly, this thread has attracted the "PUNCH PUNCH YEAH MORE PUNCHING AND SOME KICKS PUNCH PUNCH SOCK WHAM BIFF YEAH!" guy. And sure, muay thai is apparently the shit if what you're looking for in martial arts is getting punched in the face and/or learning to punch others in the face really hard.
I have to wonder though: what exactly are you studying once you've learned how to punch people really hard? How to win matches against other hard-punchers? Yeah. That sounds really interesting. Prolly works really well too on the mythological street where niggers and crackheads line up to come at you single file.
If I had to give one piece of advice to >>1, it'd be this: will the martial art you end up training teach you that people can be dealt with, or will it teach you that some people are possessed by demons and therefore cannot be reasoned with, only punched in the face really hard?

Seems to have attracted the irritating elitist martial arts nerd too.

Uh, did you read this thread at all? Fucking retard. You know fine well what I mean by traditional Jiu Jitsu, too.
Anyway, I've decided to give it a miss as I don't have the time anymore to do this, so I'm just going to play 5-a-side football instead.
