Awesome thing to do. You can make mad money, and it seems difficult to be stimulating. Have you taken any exams?

No, but I'm thinking of it as a fallback career if I can't get a job as a quant, or if I find I don't like 80 hour weeks.
I'd go straight into it but it seems a bit like a boring job for boring people, like accountancy, etc.

Oh, wait, I see other threads using the phrase that you must have started. Never mind.

A lot of people think that, but I don't think that it's easy. I think a lot of them do quantitative finance anyways.

I'd like to give you some advice but I'm a biologist and the numbers start getting hard to remember when I run our of fingers to count them on.

if all that matters is money
quant if you went to an ivy league school (or top 20)
actuary if you went to a mid-range school (or top 100)
both can make 150-200k, quant can do it faster and without taking stupid exams and can probably get in on those fat bonuses the hedge funds pay
Don't change these.
